Hi All, I just joined the site after browsing for a while and am hoping to learn a few things. I moved to Colorado from Texas a couple years ago and finally got around to do some hunting this year. Im having some trouble finding some mule deer to hunt. I havent bought an over the counter tag yet because i dont really know alot of the GMUs and have been trying to scout before gettign one. Ive ran into a couple of things:

1. All I've ever hunted is whitetails on friend's land in Texas, generally my friends knew where the whitetail were and they followed very predictable patterns. I believe (correct me if Im wrong) mule deer migrate around and the mule deer I saw earlier in the year don't seem to be there anymore, or I'm finding sign that is very old.

2. When researching mule deer all I can seem to find is whitetail info and advice for situations that pertain to flatter areas like Texas.

So, does anyone have any advice about how to go about learning about Mule Deer for a beginner (online resources, books, etc ), or some behavioral insights that would help me out?

So much of hunting is geared towards whitetails and nice land plots and FLAT ground... Almost every hunting show on tv follows this pattern. Forums like this one are helpful, although many guys are tight lipped, as they should be. Not to sound rude, but the best way to learn em is to get out as much as possible and try to figure it out. That being said, two of my favorite reads are "Hunting High Country Mule Deer" by Cameron Hanes, and "Public Land Mulies, The Bottom Line" by David Long. Im sure there are many more, but I love the hunting style, the insight, the tips, and the stories these guys share.
Good Luck!!

Thanks for the replies and book referrals guys, Ill get a couple of these ordered.

Would echo the recommendation of Eastman's books.
"Our" hunting is far more challenging than TV or private-land hunting.

Secrets: Do what Eastman's books say; learn to glass; physically work at this.....beware the terrain and our weather, they kill people every year; get away from other hunters; and...PUT IN LOTS OF TIME AND USE BOOT LEATHER.

Within the shadows, go quietly.
