Paunsaugunt or CWMU Deer tag worth the points?

I have 15 bonus points and have been applying for the Henry Mountain rifle tag for years. I know it will be many more years before I can draw a muzzleloader tag let alone a rifle tag! Since I'm not getting any younger I'm thinking about putting in on the Paunaugunt or a CWMU. Problem is I've heard all the horror stories of CWMU's and really am not that familiar with the Pauns. I would rather kill two great deer in 20 years than one giant in 35+ years.
I would love to see pictures of the deer you've seen/taken. I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Ensign Ranch is a great option for your current point position however CWMU's do have their share of issues. I would focus on the Pauns unit. It has been producing some great bucks and will take 10 years less than the Henry's. With that being said the Henry tag is the best unit there is. Have you considered a management tag?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-13 AT 09:00PM (MST)[p]I've hunted four different CWMU units since they started them. I've had friends and neighbors that have hunted a number of others, including Ensign.

I've had two Pauns rifle/muzzleloader/archery tags, I've helped a number of friends and family scout and hunt the Pauns since it became a limited entry unit. It is not like shooting fish in a barrel, if your looking for a really mature, large antlered deer. A few folks wander into a really big buck on the Pauns but believe me, it's all the best public land outfitters can do to find their clients the biggest deer on the unit. They work hard at it but still and all, not every client takes home a 190+ buck.

Having said that, based on my CWMU experience and the stories I've be told by others, there are only two CWMU I'd take over a Pauns rifle tag and that would be the Alton and the Deseret Land properties. The rest of the CWMU properties, for a public draw tag, absolutely never in a million years would I take over a Pauns rifle tag, even though I know you've never set foot on the unit.

How many CWMU units have you personal knowledge of? At least the on Pauns you can start scouting tomorrow and scout until the day you draw the tag.

How many friends and family can hunt the CWMU with you? One maybe two.

Can you take your horse, your ATV, your dune buggy on a CWMU? Not likely.

Can you camp where ever you want on a CWMU? Not likely.

How much pre-scouting will you get to done on any CWMU None. Not one minute prior to your hunt date.

How many acres are you going to hunt on a CWMU? On the Pauns, you have over a million acres of hunting property to freely hunt, on any day of your season.

How many 3 year old and older deer are there any CWMU? On the Pauns? More than a hundred, way more.

There a tons of ordinary guys who know the Pauns, you can, for sure, if you put any effort into it, find any number of guys who will give you good directions on where the deer frequent on the unit. Myself included. Total strangers helped me from the MM site, on more than one occasion.

The Alton and Deseret Land are two anomalies when it comes to CWMUs. They have the land and the large older bucks and the absolute best business plan so far as how they treat their public tag holders. They treat the public draw hunter very nearly the same as their paid clients, included free guide service, as I've been told. If I could draw one of those two CWMUs, I'd do it in a minute, but with 15 points there's no chance. They're harder to draw than the Henries.

Of course, like I said at the beginning, this just based on my experience and opinion, for what it's worth. Best of luck in the draw and your future deer hunt.

I have 16 points and in the same boat. I am trying for the muzz. Henry tag. I think i am 7 years out (my math) OR draw now and have 5 or 6 elk points. Dont know man I hope utah doesent F--- up the henry unit first. I have a budy that hunts the Paunaugunt every year and gets 180-200 every year. The thing I dont like about that hunt is I hear it is alot more productive to drive around and cover ground and catch them on the way through. (on the rifle hunt). Not saying thats the only way to hunt it just that the deer are on the move so scouting may not help. IMO

I would not take Deseret over a Pauns rifle tag. I don't think you'll have the horror stories on Deseret as you might on other CWMU's. the guys running the show there are great guys.

The only CWMU I would take over the Pauns rifle based upon the deer is the Alton. But that is within the Pauns, so you're talking a lot of the same possible bucks. But you'd have a great experience on Deseret. Just know your expectations for the size of deer you chase need to be realistic.

2lumpy made all the right points...

The fact that you can drive down to the Pauns tomorrow if you wanted to, or any other day of the year, should be enough insentive to go that direction rather than a CWMU.

And the reason these guys say the Alton and Deseret treat there public tag hunters "almost" as well as the paying hunters is because no matter how friendly and accommodating they are, there are always going to be several guys ahead of you in the "pecking order" for the bucks that are on the property. On the Paunsy, with enough time and effort, you could be the guy at the top of the pecking order.

Also, the point about who can hunt with you is a big one. I couldn't take my whole family up to Deseret with me, but on the Paunsy they are all around the campfire every night. :)

Good luck to you no matter what you decide.

With 15 or 16 points, it would be hard not to look at Henry Muzzleloader or Archery. (you have a guarantee within the next 5-7 years for a hunt of a lifetime). Also, I have been hearing that the Alton hunt is well worth it if you can draw.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-13 AT 11:52AM (MST)[p]Thanks for all the responses guys, you've given me some great things to think about. I'm by means no mathematician but the way I am reading the odds I am around 11 years before a Henry's muzzy tag is a sure thing, unless I get lucky. I know my track record for luck so I am thinking 12 years and honestly don't want to wait that long. Then the question is muzzy on the Pauns or rifle?

The Henry's muzzy tag is as hard to draw as the rifle tag. Applicants seem to move between the two hunts every year. Two years ago the rifle was easier to draw. One would also need to keep in mind the bonus point buyers. They can jump in at anytime too. Good Luck.

Just finished hunting the Pauns and took a very nice buck that I'm having mounted. Was it the buck of my dreams....no, but I choose to take it for a number of reasons. I'm willing to share where we hunted. We probably saw 200 to 300 deer a day of which 30 to 50 were bucks.

For more info, just PM me.
