LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-13 AT 10:31PM (MST)[p]I lucked out this year by drawing IMO one of the best deer tags in the my home state of Nevada with only 3 points. The genetics are GREAT and the hunt runs until the end of October which is a few weeks longer than most of the other early hunts.

I weekend hunted the first 2 weeks and passed on several bucks I normally would have been glad to take with most other tags but I knew I had the last week of the hunt to really get serious so it made it a little easier to stay off the trigger!

The last week finally arrived and so did a little weather which is what I was hoping for. The 1st morning I passed on a solid 170 buck that was rutting a handful of does. My Dad sure wanted me to drop the hammer but I assured him with the weather and time still remaining we could do better. The 3rd morning we awoke to a good 2-3 inches of fresh snow. There were 5 of us in camp so we split up to cover more country. About 30 minutes after sun up my buddy radioed me and said he had a buck spotted that I needed to check out so off we went. About an hour into the hike/stalk we stopped to take a breather when we spotted a buck further up the canyon about 800 yards chasing 2 does. We quickly got out the spotter and realized he was a stud. Our focus now was on this new buck.

It took a good hour to get into position as this unit has some of the nastiest county you could imagine. It was about 9:30 by the time we got into shooting range. I got set up and to my horror watched as my first couple of shots missed the broadside buck. The buck made his way just below the skyline and I knew this would be my last chance before he topped out. I sent one more his way and he disappeared. It sounded like a hit but nobody knew for sure what had happened. It wasn't confirmed until about 30 minutes later when my buddy got up to the top and found the buck had dropped in his tracks. We were all elated. It was truly a team effort and I appreciate all of my friends and family who took time to come and help out on the hunt.
