A Tribute To Tombstone

I thought it would be cool to have a post dedicated to this bucks life, not his death. He was I believe, the most photographed buck ever here in Utah. So if you have pics or video of this great buck, share them on this thread. Please keep comments directed at the photos, not his death.

Here is one of my favorites from this year, along with several others embedded in the video.

Absolutely outstanding! Great video with good music that fit the pictures. You should be very proud of that video Yellum. I'm going to show it to a class I have tomorrow, deer hunting kids will dream big when they see that.

I like that nickname "Tombstone". Here are a few that i have taken. It was a lot of fun watching and photographing him over the years. Sure gonna miss seeing him. I drove thru the cemetery last night. Was kinda quiet.

I'm just curious but you guys that watched this buck for years, how old was he?

Also I never really knew what city in Utah this buck was located in, and never wanted to ask since everybody else seemed to know, but what city was this buck located in?

Thanks guys for adding to the post. Cornhusker, my best estimate is he was 6 1/2 years old, and lived in Salt Lake City. Hope the kids enjoys it.

Thanks Yelum I showed it over lunch hour to any kids that wanted to come in after eating. I have a great visual and auditory system, I should have video taped the kids response, a lot of open mouths and wow's. Most kids don't realize what they were seeing other than just a big deer. I think Tombstone was genetically one in a million. Really cool thanks for sharing.

First off, well done Yelum.

I agree with the 6 1/2 age of this buck.

Here is how he started growing in 2010.

Here is what he turned into that year. Almost 170". This was the year that he got injured on his left flank. I'm guessing that he was 3 1/2 years old in 2010.

2011 was his double beam year. Because of his left flank injury he grew a split/double beam on his right side. Here is how he started out.

And we all know what he turned into that year.

Here he is in 2012

And Yelum's video shows him in 2013.

I'm happy for the hunter that got him but disappointed that tombstone and I won't share any lunches together
anymore.

Question: Why would a left flank injury cause a double main beam? I thought that had more to do with damage to the bud when growth is starting.

Observation: It's amazing how big bucks can get if they have good genes and a chance to get 4+ years old. The genetics didn't disappear. I'm just sayin'...

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-13 AT 05:52PM (MST)[p]Satch, I don't know why, but from a dozen examples I've seen, and studys I've read, a significant injury to one side of the body, results in antler deformation to the opposite side antler the next year. If the injury heals well, then the next year, the antlers return to normal. Maybe its something similar to left handed people being right brain domanant.

That said, when an antler is prematurely broken off, a screwy looking growth may occur the following year on that side. You see that a lot on elk.

Nice Pines, I believe I might have seen pictures of Tombstone's development or similar to before. Well worth posting again.

. Satch agreed and good observation on genetics, however even though his genetic code lives on no guarantee you guys will have a deer like him in the area. I have hunted the same ranch which we've monitored the age of deer killed on for 30 years. In 2003 we killed the biggest mule deer buck on the ranch 185, 10 years later with management we haven't killed one to duplicate him they seem to top out at 160 or so.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-13 AT 06:22PM (MST)[p]I know we won't ever get a duplicate of this deer, but his genes and the genes of others like him live on. Even the does can carry monster buck genes. This may not be the proper thread for this, but I would love to give the young bucks a chance to see what they can become. Seeing a nice buck is too infrequent of an occurrence these days. I would love some mass cooperation in voluntary deer management. This deer just made me think of deer's potential if they get time to grow and mature, that's all.

Yelum, do you now of anyone that has any of Tombstones sheds? Just curious if you knew of what part(s) of the year he stayed in the cemetery?

The first year I watched him, was his double beam year. I photographed him in June, and had planned to film him through the summer, but he left the end of June. I don't know if anyone has velvet pics of him grown out with the double beams, and I didn't see him again until mid Jan.

He then stayed there till the end of Oct, that year, and then returned in Dec I think. This year, I filmed him on Oct 28th but he was gone on the 2nd of Nov.

Great post! I already posted my video under "Antler growth video."

I also agree with you Yelum in your comment to Zeke about not taking pics of your sister;) Ha ha ha. That was a good reply.

Here are some of the better photos I took of Tombstone. Most are from last year, as I moved away this July. It sure was fun to watch such a big buck at such close range. He was a great buck for sure.

Here's a video I put together for CB if you'd like to check it out. Sad to see him go, but it was always a pleasure watching him and even more of a pleasure hunting him for the short time he spent up in the hills. I had my chances, but as hunting goes sometimes it just doesn't work out all the time. I'm happy that I got some video of him rutting and living up in the mountains. He was much more of an impressive looking buck seeing him out of the cemetery.

Iloved your video of him bird dogging away. Great stuff. Thanks for adding it.

Thanks for the info Yeulm. Any ideas what his sheds would score the year that he had the extra beam?

He broke off a big extra eye guard that year, and I would he would have gone over 220 if he hadn't broke. Last year I guessed him at 214, and this year I guessed him in the 221+ range.

I only went to see him one time and got his pic. Hopefully his son or grandson will grow a good set we can admire in the future.
RIP old buddy!

Can you imagine having a better headstone, than one with a rack on it.
