Colorado Deer Governors Tag Help

I have a good friend that got lucky and drew this tag at a banquet with a raffle ticket earlier this year. He has been hunting several units with no luck of turning up a buck worthy of the tag yet. The last few days, him and another of my closest friends were in Gunnison basin hunting different areas. Tonight they moved and are hunting unit 44 tomorrow for the next couple days. Such an amazing tag but unlike some might think, 200 inch plus deer are not on every ridge. I am clearing my work schedule to go down and help out. I talked to him tonight and he is feeling a bit discouraged and the pressure is building. He is as quality a person as there is and I really want to see him find a great buck. Anyway, thought I would reach out to MM nation and see if anyone wanted to help. If any of you know of a slammer and want to be part of harvesting it, shoot me a pm.

With the storm we got now the deer will be coming down and concentrating in areas. We got big wind and lots of snow over night in the NW corner. Don't give up.

I have been seeing some good buck, but nothing that is governors tag worthy. Got video the other day of a clean 3 point that I can add up to 185 ish... He was cool. I also had a smaller buck on video that was a 5 x 3 x 2 x 1. He had a messed up ped and had one antler on his his left and 3 on his right.

Just go out have fun. Follow the rules and if you see brown lee or the crew stick it to them by getting a toad.

I know of one buck out of 44 that went over 200 this year. They are there but even the guy who shot it said it was harder this year than in years past.

I have not seen a gov tag quality buck this year in 21. But I am still convinced there is one around. I know the outfitter got at least 1 over 200 this year.

Wish i could help him out. Tell him to just enjoy the "hunt" and to not get hung up on "inches". Gov tags have created too much pressure / expectations. Great to see an average joe doing it DIY.

I'd just be happy to have a tag allowing me to hunt this time of year with a rifle, in some of the best deer country in the world... Who cares if he has to shoot a dink 190" buck..??

Congrats to your friend. And he should feel no pressure from the tag, he didn't spend a gazillion dollars for it and he's getting it done with friends and family...

Stick it out around eagle. I'm a taxi in California, but I have a customer with a gov. Tag. He's been in eagle for a week and passed on two bucks over 200. A 215 type just yesterday. That is the spot right now!

We just got hammered bess, things are about to get interesting, funny thing is the guy who got the cheap elk tag hasn't set foot in the field yet and I don't think he is going to, I have no clue as to what he was thinking when he had them cut the tag in his name. Probably got all caught up in the moment and convinced himself he would giv-r-hell come fall. I offered him $5 over his cost the other day and he actually thought it over before I told him it wasn't an option.

Have a friend that is hunting a ranch on the plains with a bow and is seeing many 190+ deer. They charge a fee, if you are interested I can get you in touch.

Here is an update- My buddy with the tag just got some really tough news last week for him and his family just a few hours before we were planning to make the trip and go hit unit 44 hard. His priorities are dead on and he is a great example of a real man because the trip was postponed and he has been giving support to his wife. Some would say hunt this tag at all costs but I like to believe most would do like him and put his family first when it needs to be that way. Even when his wife insisted he hunt. After all, a deer is just a deer in the big picture. So the hunt has taken a back seat. That's just the kind of guy he is and I am proud of him. He is going to be back at it soon now. Thanks for the help offered on his behalf and hopefully some good news to come soon.
