Took this pic a few years ago. It makes me wonder about genetics. At first glance, and judging by antlers, the left buck seems older than the right buck. But the right buck has a much whiter face, bigger head and ears, and bigger body. So is the right buck just a young stud waiting to grow up, or and older deer with lousy antler genetics.

Yelum,

Great Post & Pics! Appreciated your posts the past few years as well, Thanks!

Just my humble opinion... I see the buck on the left possibly 2 years older than the smaller buck on the right. Bodies are close to the same size but if you look at the nose & center of the buck on the left... His nose is much bigger & nose to eyes are much wider! That being said it makes his ears & other characteristics look similar to the buck on the right. Just my thoughts as I disect your photo... I'm thinking thats a 4 1/2 & 2 1/2 year old bucks.. Thoughts Yelum? Again thanks for your support in the past.

So hard to say. The buck on the right does appear to have a bigger body, but still looks younger to me.

Could be an illusion in that the deer on the right is actually 10 yards closer to the camera making him look a bit bigger bodied. I believe it's obvious that those are two different age class of bucks, probably different parents.

Agree Sage buck on the right appears to be a few yards closer, causing his body to look as big as buck on the left.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-14 AT 09:05PM (MST)[p]I think sometimes we view animals as all being the same, and can't understand that there can be significant variations in size and structure, just like in humans. I am short but certainly much older than most of you big guys, so size and visible features don't always tell the whole story.
Once in Colorado my friend killed a basket headed two point(maybe 12" high by 12" wide) that was one of the biggest bodied deer I have ever seen. We postulated that he was a mature 4+ year old deer, with a mini rack. If you cut his horns off, you would swear he was a yearling.
In sheep it is well documented that an occasional "dog sheep" will be killed that looks mature, but is mini "dog" version in every way.
So I agree with the "hard to say" answer.

Deer on the right looks like a two year old to me. Deer on the left looks to be 3. The deer are in two different positions in the photo plus the 3 year old is at an unknown distance behind the other. There won't be a lot of confirmation variation and size between those two ages either. Is it possible that a 2 year old can be larger than a 3 year old? You bet. Groceries and stress effect these deer even more than it effects us. As for the whiteness of the face they have two different colored "caps" and that is a genetic trait they will both carry until they die. Thank you for sharing.

95% of my experience has been with blacktails and older bucks have bigger antler bases than young bucks. So based on that, I think the buck on the right is younger. Coloration and body size are a separate issue. The young buck has been chowing down that's for sure.

That kind of makes me scratch my head too Larry.

If I had to bet, and go along with others, I'd say just a couple young deer with different photo distance/angles or different size bodies. Their "faces" both still look young to me.

The buck on the right has certainly been on the feed!

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm with most, 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 on the ages. The bucks noses are only about 1 1/2 ft distance apart, although the angle of the left buck puts his body further away. Watching video, the left buck clearly has a larger body. He also has whiter face and larger ears, which like Tri stated, is genetic. The left buck also never got any better on the rack, than that year. No idea what the other buck turned into.

I see the buck on the left as a very good 3.5 year old and the buck on the right a nice 2.5 year old. Picture angle makes the buck on right look bigger bodied than he really is (compared to the deer on left).
