I'm new to Mule Deer. Just hunted Whitetails in central Texas. I got invited to hunt out at Corona NM. It's will be on private land. I was just wanting to see if anyone knew what to expect out there. I know the lack of rain has hurt most of New Mexico. But have allso heard that some of the area has been over hunted. Thanks for any info.

Bart78 I have hunted 38 more times than any other unit , I've killed 5 bucks in 9 years there, 4 with a bow and 1 muzzleloader buck. I have hunted it when 38 was a great deer unit, deer seen every day with many nice bucks and recently as 2 years ago since drought , over hunting and predators and poachers have had their way...All of my hunts with the exception of one were on public land. The deer herds there are in real bad shape , for all the reasons above mentioned, but most of the private ranches have held together a little better deer numbers. I have a buddy who runs a cattle ranch 17 miles out and he said the deer on his place are in bad numbers, last year they got a lion on a trail cam and he said the fawn crop was weak anyhow and they believe the lion picked off the others as needed. NM State University had a project they were working on down there and the ranch they were on seemed to have deer numbers just drop out like someone flipped a switch and the deer were reduced...I am hopeful it will someday regain what it once was, and am sure many ranches still do ok, but the deer numbers are down...The EARAMUSMIE Ranch(SPELLIN I'm sure is wrong) has grown since they bought a couple other pieces of land to add to theirs and I know they usually have real good deer hunts, but still have to believe they have to cut back on the amount of hunters they bring in....Hope this doesn't sound too awful but simply trying to help you understand the condition down there....Our game and fish department has some great people working there, but the department as a whole isn't about game management but more so of how to get the $$$ and seems at our deer herds are most at risk....

Thank you. I have been told it's pretty bad. My father in law asked me to hunt there. That's the reason I am going. My new brother in laws family has a place by Logan on the Canadian river. My cousin does some guiding out around there. And says there are some good bucks in that area. But I have allready said I would hunt with my wife's dad.
