I want to say hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum, I just found it yesterday evening searching the web. I live on the Mississippi Gulf coast, a long way from the nearest mule deer country. I hunted in Colorado years ago but that ended when a couple of crumb snatchers came into the picture. So for the past 16 yrs, me and one of my buddies have been accumulating pts in hopes of one day taking a very nice muley buck and a big bull. My buddy is in his mid 60's and feels we need to go pretty soon while he's still able to get around in the mountains. However, i'm confused on what unit we should go to. I've had CDOW people tell me to go to unit 201 but others say no. I'm looking at Units 201,21,44,66, and others, but as a NR living 1,500 miles away, working 48-52hrs a week and a family you just can't pickup and run down the road to have a look. Any pointers anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. You can PM if you prefer. Thanks

It hard to help without knowing what type of hunting you're up for. I'd like to someday hunt one of the early rifle hunts. But, I would scout it.

If you're coming from that far, only doing one trip, then a late season hunt might be best. There are lots of good options with 16 points or so.

Hello to you. Congrats. on the years you guys have put in. Do you have 16 deer points? Big old Bucks usually dont come easy no matter which unit your hunting. You need either a lot of time or a lot of good luck or a very good guide. Im sure you already know that. I have also been applying for CO mule deer for many years with just a lot of PP,s for my efforts. If you want to discuss this topic further with me send me a PM.please.

Several good suggestions already. Check the Colorado forum going way back and you will get a feel for what is going on in the units you mentioned. If you can draw a 3rd or 4th season in a good unit and then luck out to have some early snow storms, you will have a great hunt. Those later hunts put generally put you hunting during the rut, or at least at the beginning, when big bucks lose their minds. However, lots of factors play into your decision, as have been mentioned. I hunted 21, third season two years ago and lucked into a really good buck, but I also had some good help from people with local knowledge. So after your search, choose wisely and then ask for help.
Good luck
