About how many droptine bucks have you seen in your lifetime?
How many have you killed?
What do you think the percentage of bucks on the planet that will have a droptine this year?

This is the only droptine buck I have ever killed.

This is the one my late wife shot a few years back. Her only buck.

Never seen a decent Buck with a Dropper during Season I could have shot!

Seen a Buck 2 years ago that would go 260"+ that had 8"-9" Droppers on both sides,I'm Still Sick, that kinda Sshhhitt will make you think bad things for a few Minutes!:D

LAST EDITED ON Feb-27-14 AT 08:25PM (MST)[p]Never arrowed a drop tine mule deer....but have seen a few over the years. The best one was in the Kaibab in late 90's. Here's one I photographed this past fall (2013) in CA:

I did manage to get lucky and arrow this CA Blacktail (hybrid) with a split dropper off his main beam a few years back:

I've seen quite a few but on ave, I'd say well under 1%. My 1st was in 1997 in the Chalk Creek, UT area. Couldn't find the pic as it wasn't digital. I also saw 3 others but no pics. Never killed one, or found a shed.

These are my 2nd through 4th, on consecutive years, 2001 and 2002

Saw these two at the same time, one on each side of the truck. There were some Holly Shitz that day.

These two were a year apart on the same hill. Hard to see but this cactus buck has matching 3 inch droppers on the back

2012 was a big, producing 3 for me

Two of those 3 returned as droppoers this year.

Theres logic, and theres women. They don't go together.

In 2004 I saw one in slate canyon on the Henry's with an 8 to 10 inch droptine. It's the only one I've ever seen. Wish I had a pic.

Seen a few over the years. Got some video of a couple of them. Had a couple buddies kill dropper bucks, including one this past season. Never killed one myself. They are few and far between.

There is a very strong droptine genetic trait where I live. I have seen countless droptine bucks over the years, from yearlings to big ol' monsters. I have picked up countless sheds over the years with droptines. Some bucks grow them one year, then don't have one the next. Not sure really what causes the flips. i have pulled the pin on a few over the years. Missed a few too. This is my biggest dropper to date. Just a all around great character buck. this one is a triple dropper. My hunting partner killed one in the same area a few years later that had 5 droppers and had a very similar look. Probably was related.

Brian,
Tell us the story on your droptine buck. I've never seen that pic before. That thing is a stud, and looks like it was killed in some cool country. Probably a cool story to go with it.

I saw my first one in Alberta last year. A young Muley that was already a 7x5 with 3 inch double droppers of the main beam. He will be a stud someday if he makes it. About 18 inches wide, probably only 2 1/2 years old.

Like Yelum said, less than one percent, in my case, a lot less. I've seen a handful, a real small handful like the buck your sweetheart shot. I remember thinking that when you first posted that photo a few years ago.

I've seen another handful where the main beam went out normal then turned down rather than up but never consider them a drop tine.

I've seen split cheaters where one side went up, the other down.

The most i've seen are the odd stuff, usually on young bucks where it looks like there's a messed up pedestal and antlers are coming off in multiple directions, some down over an eye, some out of the middle of the skull plate and down, some just gobs, looking like it was molten and dripping off all over. Seen the same thing on elk, just bigger gobs.

So far as what I consider a true blue, bonafide "drop tine" like the one you killed in the snow, I don't recall as having ever seen one. At least not one that left a lasting memory.

Ypu got one located I can come see? ;-)

DC

Only seen two, both out of season. Would love to get one though. I'd say there are less than 1%, more like .05%. Oout of the thousands of bucks seen and only two have droptines.... Granted, some very well could have had drop tines and just didnt see them.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

My one and only drop tine buck. I have seen less than a handful of them in my life. I have been fortunate to have found a few sheds with drop tines.

Drop tine or badass kickers?????
T264

At first glimpse of this guy, I thought, "Man what a tangled mass of dropper points on his right side!"...just packing a sagebrush around! :)
2927dropper_buck.jpg

(Actually only seen one dropper buck while hunting, although there are more than a few out there)

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-14 AT 09:54AM (MST)[p]Been watching a buck for few years now. He is a main frame 3x3, has split eye guards on right. His left side is a mass of horn and has a tine that comes down and curls around behind his eye. Has a 6 inch dropper that splits coming off his main beam. It's the only dropper I've seen in person.

Happy Hunting

I can honestly say that I have never seen a droptine buck. :(

I've seen a few...none that I've shot though. Here are a couple California bucks including one under a porch.

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

I'm less lucky (or have poor optics) because I have never seen one!
I've seen some crazy looking buck in the last 45 years of deer hunting but have yet to identify a true dropper.
Weird, I know.
I have to get out more!!!!!

Wish I was better with pics. My wife shot a 31.5" buck with a 7" dropper in 2009 in CO. Her first and only muley so far.

Saw a buck this year with an 8-10" corkscrew dropper and another extra main beam or a LONG brow that was 10" or so inside and parallel to his left main beam, where he also had the dropper. And he also had tripods on both top forks. Have some good velvet pics of him. And saw him after the season. He's on the 2014 short list.

Our hunters have taken a few through the years. Most were whitetails. One of the best bucks I ever saw was about 20 years ago. Double drops on one side, single on the other and about 8-10 LONG points off each side with a main beam that was webbed. HUGE whitey. Figured he would score about 225 and be close to the Wyo record. But we did not get him killed.

I've never killed one and I'd say the odds of a buck having a drop tine are maybe 1 in 300-500.

Cool pics. Thanks

I have seen 2 droptine bucks. Both in the same year while scouting for my hunt. I was lucky enough to be able to get the biggest one opening morning in 2012.

Hey BADGEBOY!

You need to Decimate them Antler Chewin SOB's!

The Antlers lined up in front of the Tent?

I see they been Chewin the closest Antlers to the Camera?

Was that a Dead Head?

Or are they chewin them up as soon as you shoot them?

I have shot 2, I guess you could say three. The third comes off the beam but is not really long and sticks out rather than down. Dad has shot one. I don't know how many I have seen but enough that I can't put a number to it.

The third, I guess it is a droptine

Bess,
That was a deadhead found during that hunt. I had almost stepped on the deadhead while I was filming one of the other bucks in that lineup and didn't even notice it. My buddy found it the next day. A couple years previous, I picked up a brown shed off that same dropper buck. It was just a young un but had a sweet dropper and trash already. Too bad a lion killed him before he turned into a real giant.

I kinda figured it was a Dead Head!

So BCBOY?

Compared to previous years, lets say the last 30 years?

What's your Deer Herd Looking like compared to previous years?

Was booming up until the last 5 years or so, that is when the wolf pops went through the roof in my area. Deer got hit hard but not near as bad as the moose. In some of my local units we are 10% of what we were 7 years ago. For the most part seems like the wolves have moved to greener pastures to the South of me or else have starved, that is how bad things are. But I have hope! It ain't like a winter kill where the winter range gets thrashed. Our winter range is in great shape, so the deer should rebound faster. We still have deer, just not the highs we saw a few short years ago. I found the biggest sheds of my life 2 falls ago, so there are still some smart ol' bucks that survived the wolf onslaught. But when the were being hunted 24/7 365 by the dogs, they hit the thickest crap imaginable and are still there. Doesn't make for easy hunting for us 2 legged predators.

Thanks BC!

The Deer herd here SUCKS!

It's not just a Utah Problem Neither!

All Western States are Hurtin!

We've still got a few Big Boys too!

Just like you said though!

Back in the Thickest Shhitt you've ever seen & not really a way to Find/Hunt them!

It's been 40 years now,I don't think they're coming back!
