I thought I had a few more of dad's pics on my computer. Darn it! Wanted to share them.

Checkout this 'ole roman nose! My first big one. What an adventure. Dad and I backpacked into a remote canyon in southern Utah that doesn't seem too remote these days. On the 3rd morning, I peeked over a ridge and this big boy was standing there looking at me. I had no idea he was 34 inches wide, 6x7, ended up scoring 208. Of course score was nothing back then. Just width was a big deal.

The drive home was neat stuff. Back then we had the big antlers on the roof of the truck for all to see and nearly everyone drove by with a thumbs up. It was sure different back then.

If dad hadn't of dragged my butt out of bed that morning, this site wouldn't exist, because I probably would have taken a totally different road in life. Crazy....

Here is a big Colorado buck I took in 1980. My wife was with me when we came face to face with this big buck. Her first thought was that it was an elk. He was walking up the hill and we were coming down. At 30 yards he swapped ends and I made a quick off hand shot at the back of his neck, dropping him immediately. The whole encounter lasted about 5 seconds. You can see a blood trail beneath his left eye where the bullet came out.

I was able to get the Jeep right up to him. The Jeep did not have a tailgate and we had quite a time getting him in. No sooner had we done that when 3 guys came riding up on horseback. After I put the spare back on we headed for camp with his head as you see it. Of course we got lots of looks and many thumbs up. I've always loved the photo of him in the Jeep.

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

This was my first trip to the Book Cliffs back in 1985 before it was A LE unit. Since I had never been there before we headed right for the top not knowing that even back then the Deer move down during the Rife hunt.I seen only three Deer in three days of hard Hunting. But all of them were Bucks. It was three point or better back then and the first two were two points. We all were discouraged by the lack of Deer we saw so we slept in the last morning before we left. I got up first and put the coffee on and went for a walk outside camp to take care of business. I am glad I always take my gun because on my way back I jumped this Buck right by camp.

And here is what he looks like after 28 years on my wall.

Here is another Colorado buck from the 80's. I passed this buck up opening day. I had seen a 40 inch 4X4 earlier in the day and really wanted to try again for him. My hunting partner shot a 33 inch 5X5 that day and we took the Jeep in to get him the next day. I ended up rolling the the Jeep (4 times) trying to get back out of there. There were 4 of us including wives and the buck and we all lived with just bruises and scrapes. Could have been worse. After getting checked out at the ER, I decided if I could find this buck again, I'd take him. I found him only a couple hundred yards from where I'd seen him last and made a easy 50 yard shot. We had to wait 10 days for the Jeep to be fixed and then drove it back to California. Quite a trip! I call this buck Crash.

The bucks so far have been awesome!

For those that only have hard copy prints, if you can't scan them, just use your new digital camera to take a picture of the picture.

It was 1988 and I was 15 years old. It was the last day of the Utah general season deer hunt and my dad, my two uncle's and I decided to go for a last minute burn up the canyon.

There was 8" of fresh snow on the ground, it was snowing sideways, and the wind was blowing like crazy. My old man told me to get out of the truck and pointed up the canyon that is known to us as "buck knoll". He gave me and my uncle instructions to side hill up the canyon through a few mahogany patches and then to work our way down the canyon where he would meet up with us.

I thought he was crazy and that it quite possibly could be considered child abuse to kick your kid out of the truck in these conditions.

My uncle and i were slipping and sliding all the way up the canyon. My uncle had fallen in a rock slide and landed on his rifle. We were just getting to about 300 yards from the top when it happened. My uncle yelled "big buck" and pointed. He went to jack a shell in and his stock broke in half from the hard fall he had taken earlier (lucky for me). I was shooting an old 308 Savage lever action topped with a Redfield fixed 4X scope. Buck fever kicked in and the first 4 shots were clean misses. I remember thinking to myself this is your last shot you had better make it count. I squeezed off and the buck dropped. The shot was not fatal so i had to dig another shell out of my pocket. I remember shaking so badly that i dropped the shell two or three times in the snow before i could finally get it loaded and put my buck down for the count.

I looked over at my uncle to see if he had witnessed what had just taken place and vividly remember him standing there with his gun stock in one hand and his barrel in the other shaking his head.

It was quite a chore getting this buck off the hill. Finally i had got to the road and remember sitting there shaking from "buck fever" or quite possibly hypothermia while i was waiting for my Dad to come pick me up.

Right before dark my Dad had finally made his way back to me and had no idea what had taken place. When he saw the deer he was one proud Dad to say the least.

I won the High School big buck contest for the widest deer measuring just shy of 31", and won a 30-06 rifle.

This buck is definitely not the biggest buck i have taken but is definitely the most memorable. My life has revolved around mule deer hunting ever since this great day. There is definitely no cure for "buck fever"

As Bad as it seemed at the time!

The 80's were Damn sure better than now!

I Remember thinking How Crappy Deer Hunting had got at that time!

Love the vintage photography. I'm a flatlander that didn't start going west until the mid-90's.

I like looking at clothes the hunters are wearing. How many pictures do you see now a days when the hunter is wearing blue jeans and a jean jacket? I remember wearing the same thing when I hunted as a kid.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-14 AT 09:31PM (MST)[p]Here is my second buck with a bow and my first P&Y. It was 1986 (I was 16) and the last day of the Colorado archery season. My dad had actually got on this same buck around 7:30 a.m., but could not amke it happen. Arouns 11:00 a.m. I got on the same buck about a 1/2 a mile away. I stalked in within 35 yards of him a made a marginal shot, but kept on him and was able to finish him off about 1 1/2 hours later.

Here are 2 Colorado muleys that my dad and brother took during 3rd rifle in 1986.

And another Colorado muley I took in 1988.

Dennis Suter sent over these photos for me to post in this thread. All from the 1980's. Great bucks!!

Nice Bucks LowCountryElk! That first pic brings back some great times for me. That looks like A Burnt Orange 1976 Chev Stepside Scotts Dale. I had one just like it all decked out with roll bar , push bar and KC lights. I put over 100,000 miles on it in less than 4 years. Most of them in the hills Some of the best times of my life. My dream is to find another one and fix it up.

Yeah....I could cruise down Highway 44 in NW NM in that truck and get those NM highway crews working double time when they saw me coming.....ha ha! My uncle ended up with it and still has it...nice truck but a bit light and squirrelly on really muddy roads even with 4 wheel drive.

You were a little Younger back then LCE!:D

Good to hear from you!

Low Country, I meant SW sorry. Were you on private property? If so do you know who owned the property at that time. The background looks just like a ranch I have hunted in Norwood for the last 30 yrs.

Muley

Brian- Here's a buck I took in 1984, man I was only 25 yrs. old. The buck was an 8x7, 34" wide and grossed 186.
