I am looking for some feedback - not your secret honey hole, but possible units in Colorado that are worthy of 8 to 10 Non-Res points for Mule Deer. I am not going to hold out much longer and want to discuss a few DIY units that I could possibly draw this year or next. Fire Away

THATS A TUFF QUESTION, I HAVE 9 POINTS AND I KNOW I AM IN NO MANS LAND. NOT BECAUSE OF THE POINTS, BUT BECAUSE IN THE LAST 5 YEARS THE MULEY PICTURE HAS GONE SOUTH. EXAMPLE.....I HAD 4 BUDDIES KILL 4 TOADS IN UNIT 21 FIVE YEARS AGO.....WONT HAPPEN NOW!!!!.MOST UNITS HAVE GONE THE SAME WAY AS UNIT 21 HAS. ITS NOT A GREAT CURRENT ARA FOR DEER AT THE MOMENT. I AM A ELK LOVER SO I WILL SIT ON MY POINTS UNTIL I FIND A GOOD DEER UNIT. ..................YD.

How many points is it that you have exactly?
That could be a big factor. Also what weapon type?

buckhorn

Are you looking for rifle hunts only? Or are you willing to do a muzzleloader or archery hunt? How about scouting? How much time can you invest? What caliber of buck are you realistically hoping for?

I have 8 points going into this years application, and mainly looking at a rifle hunt. I spend my Sept hunting bugling bulls in Montana, so Oct-Nov are better dates for me. Someone suggested unit 33 4th season as a good hunt with snow, looks like 7 points are needed to get that tag?

Thanks for your input guys!

I have 10 points and have been looking for a rifle hunt this year. Looking to go guided since I am too far away to scout and this is last time I will ever have 10 points.

I talked to one outfitter in unit 54 third and told me he couldn't in good conscious take my money for a mule deer hunt in 54. Talked to a reference for another outfitter in 54 and he killed a 160 on the last day and that was the biggest one he had seen.

I talked to a reference in 53 third and he killed a 180 on the fourth day and that was the only buck bigger than 160 that he had seen.

Both 53 and 54 third have OTC elk hunts at the same time and there were people everywhere.

I could have went to the eastern plains but that wasn't what I was looking for. The reference I talked to said he saw more whitetails than mule deer.

I had a good reference for an outfitter in Unit 40 but he was already booked for this year.

I would have needed another point or two for 61. Garvey Brothers in 61 have a good reputation but they are booked two years in advance.

I ended up booking a hunt in 77 that's only going to take 3 points to draw. So I am spending my 10 points on a 3 point unit.

After talking to many people I came to the conclusion that a 10 point unit isn't necessarily any better than a 3 point unit. Of course 10 points is the middle ground, not enough for the top end and too many for the easier draws.

I started this search by going to Hunters Trailhead and started looking for hunts that took 8 to 10 points.

Good luck with your hunt.
