Looking for any members or readers with advice or info on mule deer hunts on the Kaibab Paiute Tribal Reservation in northern Arizona south of Kanab, Utah.
I've got my name on the waiting list with the Tribal Game and Fish Dept. Those that have hunted the previous year are given first choice. If a person does not pay for the tag or can't hunt then Game and Fish Manager Danny Bullets begins to call those on the waiting list. There are three 5 day hunts scheduled late Nov to early Dec with 5 - 6 hunters per time frame. They will not disclose where one stands on the waiting list. They will not disclose when they will begin to call those on the waiting list. They only state a hunter may be called if an opening occurs. If one does not answer the phone they go to the next name on the list. An odd way to do things if one asks me. Would that be an indication of the mindset of the tribal guides which are required to be employed as well? I live on the east coast. In my case prior scheduling in advance would be required. The deer migrate through this 100,000 acre plus reservation from the Paunsagunt - hence my interest. I hear they harvest some quality mule deer on this reservation. But the details just to secure a tag are perplexing. Am I pursuing a hopeless tag that is more suited to those that live in northern Arizona or southern Utah? Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Never hunted it but from what you have described, you better be packed and ready to hunt from Thanksgiving on, and don't miss a call!

The genetics are solid in the area. You are hunting deer that mainly migrate off of Cedar mountain. There are probably a few that come off the Paunsaguant side but I'd wager not too many. The tribe kills a ton of deer on the Rez winter range. I have been told, but have not verified, that all tribe members can harvest a deer. There are a small number of Trophy hunters on the REZ which will put the hurt on the top end bucks. Toss in another 30+ tags they sell to the public and I'd say they get plenty of pressure. I know of a hand full of big bucks killed on the Rez but they are rare. Most guys are killing 150-170 type bucks. Thank heavens a good portion of these animals winter in Utah or the Utah hunt would be a bust.

Thanks very much. I did not know all of this. The fee is $2500 for a non tribal member and then another $1000 or so for the required guide. Too much for a 150 class buck on a moments notice to fly in from back east. I guess there are just no "sleeper units" anymore. Maybe I just need to win the lottery and blow financial smoke up Don Peay's SFW/Utah rear end and buy my way in!!!!
