When I first saw this buck, I was super excited. He's heavy, has good tine length, and might put on another 2 inches. What do you guys think? What do you think a buck like this will end up scoring? How wide? Is he a taker? Would he make good deer jerky?

Or is he just a dink and I'm a dope for even taking the time to take a picture?

Shooter for sure in my eyes ! side note : If you tag him don't make all the meat into jerky , I love backstraps and tenderloin !

23-24 inch 4x4 with good forks. I think he is a younger deer with great potiential. You have passed on a lot of bigger bucks.

He's a shooter on a general tag in any state. 2 more inch of growth is a minimum. In a few weeks you'll wonder why you even asked. That will be a book buck.

shooter for sure in my book, with your buck history... probably not. but i would tag that buck.

I think he is knocking on the door of 180 right now even with his narrow spread credit, he has room to grow a few more inches as well. I know if it we're me I would be hunting him this year. I love the mass on that pig.

I don't think he break 180 now,may be in a few weeks. When do the bucks in this country hard horn? They always look more massive in the velvet, let him rub then I will give a mass#.

I'd guess he's pushing 180" right now. Although a little narrow, I like the mass so I'd shoot him.

He is right there on most limit entry units, unless I scouted several bigger and he might get passed for a day or two.

Any general season and he is down!!!

On an OTC archery tag, I'd do whatever it took to get within distance.

On a +5 year tag, I'd still probably put him at the top unless I had a another lined up.

Beautiful looking deer regardless of inches.

Decent forks, good mass, nice symmetry, and I think he's wider than u guys think...outside spread. He breaks 185+ when he's done. IMHO

177" as is.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Nice pics Flounder! I'm with Jake. I don't see him quite getting to what Yelum thinks, but dang close. Roman nose, sway back, pot belly...damn sure no youngster! Chute'em!

Very interesting deer. Thanks for posting. I will not predict whether he will grow a single extra inch over what he has now. Could he? You bet! Will he nobody knows for sure this late in the year. Right now he appears very close to 175. I doubt he will break 180. He looks very much like a 5 year old deer. It is very hard for the majority of hunters let him walk regardless of weapon. I wish you luck if you decide to pursue him and even more luck if you decide to hunt for one better.

I'd love to take that Buck but i'd understand if someone else passed on him.

I spotted a Buck just like this guy, without the velvet, for Larrbo on his late season Cali hunt two years ago. We took a long look at him through the Zeiss big glass, he asked me and i said either way. He passed him up looking for better.

I like big Typicals and this is going to be one!

He is a nice Buck for sure but the WOW! factor just isn't there.

We need to pass this one if we want him to become a true MONSTER MULEY.

AS the saying goes Founder, If you have any doubt... Don't shoot.

Founder, you sly dog. You know exactly what he is. He's a solid trophy buck. YELUM is rarely wrong and you should always heed his advice. I still might follow that nontypical you posted earlier, but this is a really good deer if he's the kind you like.

You have excellent possibilities. Looking forward to the late September pics.

I think he will finish close to 180". I'm looking for something a little bigger or with more character. Beautiful buck, I might change my tune on the last couple days of the hunt.

This is not just a question of whether or not YOU should pass him... It's a question of whether or not you're okay with him getting killed by another hunter in your area. You can't expect him to make it through the season for next year. If he does, its a bonus (if you find him again next year).

If another hunter whacks him opening morning - how would that make you feel..?? If you couldn't care less, then you don't want this buck. But if you would be jealous in any way, then you should pursue this buck first...

Some deer are deceiving. Sometimes they look bigger than they end up scoring. Sometimes they surprise you and score better than they look. I would put this deer in the latter category.

.................that will NOT be a book buck

JB

Brian, that's a subjective question, but for me personally, I would take that buck. Knowing you, you better keep looking. It's a long off season to have doubts about the buck you took. It's that age old dilemma. Kind of a good problem to have though.:)

Big enough!!! How many of us actually get to shoot at a 200 incher? Not a lot of us. He is in the 180 range and will never get much larger. He may start to grow cheaters later in life. He is already in his prime. I am a mass junky any way, so it is a no brainer for me.

I have seen several Book bucks with similar features that people passed up because they didn't look like book bucks only to have someone else shoot them later and find out they Booked. They all have the have same MO- tall, heavy, symmetrical racks with good tine length but short on width.

Everyone thinks a Book buck has to be 30" wide, but there is more than one Book buck with a mid 20s frame.

I'm not saying this buck will Book, but I think some may be underestimating him.

Is founder going to take a guess at the score?
I'd say 175 and a shooter on all units except a few.
Thanks for sharing the pics.

I'm no good at guessing score, but I'd guess high 180's. Not sure he'll get into the 190's, but he very we'll could.

Tag soup
or a very clean 180 class buck. I guess that depends on how many other bucks that you are seeing that score higher are easier to hunt.
I would hunt him, and hope you run across one of his big brothers. BUT I wouldn't pass on a shot if presented it self.

My only input is that sure doesn't look like a younger deer that needs a few years to grow to me.

Deep sway back, beer gut, etc. all say a fully mature deer to me.

Always hard to tell on a velvet buck, but looks like really good mass to me.
