After killing my first deer with a bow at 40 yards with a double lung I was really excited. And so was my 10 year old brother and cousin he ran and bled about 50 yards. That night we cleaned him and through on the tailgate packed with ice and went to bed. The next morning I went to go check out my first archery deer but something was way out of line. My deer was gone thinking of what could of happened I found an unusual scat next to my truck. Bear scat figuring out what happened we walked about 50 yards and found this.

Gotta watch out for those Bears. I love seeing these young people get deer with their bows.

If your in Utah call the DWR, I know years back a friend shot a deer hung it in a tree and a bear or cougar got it. He had to give them the entire buck but he did get a replacement tag and was able to try from another buck.

They gave me the option to turn in the head and get a new tag or keep it and walk away

Hope you got another tag.
Had a elk that bears did that to in NM one year, really sucked.

I think it'd be hard to turn in your first ever archery buck. While he may not be a giant or anything, he's still a trophy and an amazing story/memory. I honestly don't think I would turn him back in.

+1!

Bears are becoming a serious problem in some areas of the state. As a predator they may be causing some significant problems for fawn survival. According to some articles I have read they are very efficient at finding and eating fawns during June. Every time I set out trail cams , I get more bear pics than anything else. It seems they are displacing deer and elk in some areas. Just another predator taking their piece of the big game resource which just makes less for us to hunt.

Yep - you got a brave bear for sure! Better be sure and let the Fish and Game know - because he isn't afraid of humans and could be a problem bear.

Yep I lost some elk meat once.....once! Skin em quarter em bone em bag em and get em in a tree asap! Congrats on the buck! It's an unfortunate incident but a lesson learned. As I said it happened to me too!

Nice first buck, congratulations. Did you see any tracks?

Tony, I tend to agree with lion being the top suspect. If it is a bear, it is a small one. Although, I thought cats buried their scat? Also, the way the carcass was partially covered...lions do that, I didn't think bears did.

Congrats on the kill.....nice shoot'n...I think most likely a bear....never saw lion scat look like that...not enough animal hair in it....I think a lion would have made more of a mess eating that deer. Next time put your game in an ice chest hang it up high in a tree or something to help keep the critters from getting a free dinner ?
