LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-14 AT 10:10AM (MST) by Founder (admin)[p]Killing a decent archery buck has been tough for me. Maybe I am just not that good
Anyway, scouted about 7 days worth and did not find to many shooter bucks. But did find enough. This one was the best. I found him opening morning surrounded by 70+ elk. 3 5-points all rubbed off and bugling. Was cool to see but had to wait until they all moved on to attemp a stalk. About 10 I saw an opening for a stalk. Got 95 yards with him bedded. He got up and moved off. Couldn't relocate so I backed out. 2 days later found him in the perfect spot. Got 65 yards. He is bedded with a big pine between us. It was perfect. Until A doe I hadn't seen walked In between us and bedded 25 yards away. 2 hours later she gets up and moves off. I continue to get closer. He stands to feed and I have him at 55. Just as I am about to draw the doe sees me. I thought she was gone. She blows and that's that. Never saw him again.
Better buck sightings were few and on day 7 the morning looked shot but checked one more spot. Within 10 seconds I had spotted a good deer. My buddy and his son were there for that morning and that really helped out. The buck was 720 yards away. He was in a great spot, feeding by himself. I ran down quick and before I knew it I was right on top of him. Range said 47 with the angle shoot for 43. As I drew and stood I see he is looking at me. Sage halfway up his chest. The arrow just clipped the sage but I saw it hit him and heard a crack. He whirled and stormed off Into some brush where he hit it and did a complete full front flip. It was crazy. Between that and a tumble down the hill he shattered both front legs. Compound fractures on both.
My arrow went low through the front shoulder and out the other side. Both lungs but very low.
My best bow buck to date.
Lightened up the packs all we could as we were about 1000 yards straight down. In doing so I foolishly left my knife at the top of the ridge. I keep my havalon in my bino carrier. Dumb. Luckily I had 3 replaceable blades in my pack I found. Quartering up and caping without a handle with the things was not easy. But we got it done.
Great time. Was pretty excited to get him.
Sorry about the sideways photos. I am not that good with this stuff.
These are all from my iPhone. Those held sideways show up right.
Oh well.
