Hey All,

Haven't posted on here for a bit, but I have a situation. A relative of mine received a phone call from the DWR, and he is the alternate for a Henry's Rifle Tag that was turned in...

I know everyone dreams about this, especially if it could happen to us. Im hoping some of you can shed some light, as our preparation time is coming to an end with a fast approaching season. He's got the Tag, and we are gonna make it happen. But some direction from the fellow MM's would be greatly appreciated. And I know my relative will appreciate it too.. it's a once in a life time deal, and we are really pumped. If you have any help, please let me know.

Thanks All, Happy Hunting...

Who in the ire right mind would turn that tag in?

Had to be medically related or something. I've never been there so I'm no help.

Take us along with pics and story.

+1, for dang sure! I'd quite my job if I didn't have vacation for that tag.

There are many things that would be nice to wish for or say but then I would be just like him.

I ran into a guy down there while scouting, he said he has had that tag 3 of the last 4 years. He turns it in every year if he can't find a 230 plus deer.

Even if you're looking for a 230 this would be the year to have that tag. I've heard of over 20 200" bucks and 3 between 220-250". And that's from fellas that would be pretty solid on the scores.

I didn't realize the Henries received so much moisture this year. I know the Strip has an incredible number of bucks over 200 inches this year. Just hope CO has a couple come November.

Back to subject. Do not hunt the furthest two peaks on the south end of the 5 peak mountain range. I know that's pretty generic, but I'd hate to see you waste your time on those two dead peaks. I know a guy who was told by one of the prominent outfitters that there was some magnum bucks on those peaks...NOT

Nothing will beat getting down there and just getting familiar with the country. There are a lot of good bucks on the Henrys and your friend should not worry about getting a nice deer, because he will. He just needs to spend a few weekends getting familiar with the roads and vantage points. Get some maps, play with google earth. If you can get down there during the end of the archery season and again when the muzzy guys are down there, you can pick some of there brains. Funny how a guy is more willing to share info once he is on the mountain and realizes your hunt is after his.
My best advice for your friend is to take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment. That is a fantastic tag and he will have a great hunt. Just don't let scores and anxiety ruin it for him.

Congrats to your friend. I have to agree, after my trip down there over the 24th of July, I would think this was the year to shoot a giant on that mountain. It was green as green can be- lots of moisture. Don't know why someone would turn a tag in with almost two more months to find a giant.

With that said- Try and keep your friend calm about the tag. Don't go running all over the mountain in a panic thinking you are missing deer "over there", or that someone else is in a "greener pasture". Enjoy the incredible beauty of the range, spend time glassing an area over well. Like anywhere else, luck is involved.

I would spend a few days down there before the hunt to locate some bucks. There are so many peaks and drainages you can choose from, just pick one, find a vantage point, and start looking. You will see bucks. You will see big bucks. You will see them high, and you will see them low. Just do that until your friend gets behind the glass and says, "Woh!!" Then go kill that buck.

Frankly, I think worst-case-scenario is your friend kills a 180" buck... :)

Here's my summer scouting video:

We spent most of our time on Mt Ellen, but if we would have had another day, we would have spent it over on Mt Pennell (or whatever its called) over by "The Horn" and that direction. There's no road up over the mountain there, so maybe there are more giants living there.

I drew a tag there last year and spent a good amount of time there. My opinion is scouting this early will get you familiar with the Henrys but don't expect to find your buck there today and him be there during rifle season. I would concentrate on Mt. Ellen to Mt. Pennell and everything in between. Sage Flat, Dugout Flat, Coyote Benches, The Horn. I didn't go south from there so don't know anything about that area. Have to have a good spotting scope, good glass. Get high and glass the areas that have been chained. Learn the roads so that once you spot your buck you know how to get as close as you can to him. The key is getting high and glassing. I'm sure that the archery hunters and muzzy hunters will have the bucks pushed into areas that make them harder to locate than during the summer months. Get there a week before opener an I'm sure you will find your buck. Best of luck. Look forward to seeing your pictures. Man I love the Henry's.

I can't believe this thread... so much jealousy over here. Have fun and good luck! I would agree 180" is about the worst that can happen on this hunt.

If you are referring to me I was being facetious [fuh-see-shuh s].

I was congratulating someone I don't know on a great deer mixed with humor.

Lucky man your buddy is. I was just there and in 3 days saw some dandy bucks. I didn't even get off the roads either. Something tells me it is much different and harder once the first rifle shots are fired.

Osprey
That a fine looking Buck.
