Antler Growth? Take a Look

Yes, I must be obsessed. I know, it's sick. It was driving me crazy wondering how much more this bucks antlers would grow from July 18th to September 1st. The buck was shot. You can read and watch details in my Hunt Adventure Challenge.

However, I wanted to post these pics and ask you guys, how much did he grow and was it as good as you would expect from July 18th to September 1st? Less? More?

And what is it with those antler tips hanging over like that? They added length to their measurements. Those ends were super soft. Heck, all of the antler was very soft, but those ends moved around like rubber.

Would you straighten those tips before the antlers harden or leave them as they are?

Just a conversation thread..........

The actual antlers may be broken under the velvet. Not terribly uncommon just uncommon for a person to witness it at the window of time you saw it. We had an axis deer come in this year with broken beam tips but the velvet was fine and intact.

Sorry you didn't get this guy. Hope you have a good one in your back pocket somewhere else.

If they move around there's no doubt they're broke under the velvet. I'm guessin an inch and a half in tine lenghth? They're all but done come late july. It's amazing how fast that bone grows in a hundred day growin season!

id leave them how they are. i love character on antlers. so anything that was done naturally or caused by the buck i would leave. original is always better. as far as growth goes. from what i see he put a bit on. i cant believe the mass and palmation on that buck!! unfortunate situation though. better luck with your rifle.

I would leave it the way it is.

Bummer for you Founder. How aggressive to be on a buck is a tough call. Sorry it didn't work out.

A few years ago you asked how some of these guys manage to kill big bucks year after year. I think you have figured it out. You have my admiration.

Leave them, I think it from feeding and having those tips hitting brush ground rocks ect.

But if they're broke under the velvet, then something had to of happened to him. Some accident. I have looked at thousands of bucks and very few have I seen with tips like that, and never have I seen one in-which so many tips were like that. Can't be from hitting brush and rocks, can it? If it was, wouldn't it be more common?

Cody (the dude who killed the buck) said that the buck had some tumor or something like that on its neck. Could that play into the antler tips?

I do have one buck myself that has a tip like that, but I recall breaking that one myself right after killing the buck.

It looks like the buck just ran right straight into a wall to break all those antler tips, if broke is what they are. And they were like that before it was shot.

Very strange. I'd also leave them as they are. That was one thing I thought was kind of unique and cool about the buck.

If they were broken then they would be loose. They look solid in the picture. I have seen deer grow horns with ends like that on drought years.

If the antlers were still that soft this late in the year, he is kind of showing some Stag characteristics.

What a cool buck! Deer can grow 3-4" of bone a day. So IMO this buck was shot to soon. Looks like he was still growing to me. I've seen tips like that in the past from the deer falling hard on his antlers after being shot, happens a lot less once the antlers have started to harden out to the tips.

I just call em as I see em!

This is a set of sheds I found 10 years ago in Utah. He had similar antler tips. Not broken and hard.

Better get up there!!!
