Got a question about velvet buck

I arrowed a buck on Friday and it still had velvet. The question is it was all dried up but still in tact except for a few small areas. There still is some bucks I have seen that are in velvet yet but most are hard horned now. I'm not sure way he didn't shed his velvet. He was a 3x3 with eye guards and a good buck for me. It is getting harder each year as I get older so I was happy. LOL

If his velvet was dry he was probably going to rub it off within a few days. I've watched two mature bucks the last 3 years that are always together. The one has rubbed off the third week of August all 3 years and has blood red antlers when he rubs and the earliest the other buck has rubbed was the 3rd week of September and his antlers are bone white for awhile until he rubs some color into them. I guess some bucks can't wait to get rid of it and others don't seem to mind it.

Thanks>> that sure could be the case. I see a few mature bucks and small dinks still with velvet and a lot that have shed. Most years though they usually have rubbed it off by now. I did watch one a week ago rubbing it off and was interesting to watch. There was 4 other bucks just watching him get rib of the velvet. LOL Thanks

So this makes me wonder why they rub it or why they don't. Doesn't seem like it would itch. So what makes them do it?

My dad killed a 6 year old buck in the Book Cliffs 3 years ago. He still had dried out velvet hanging on 3 of his tines... I'm guessing he was a lazy old buck... LOL :)
