deer scoring?

My deer is at the taxidermist. He stripped the velvet and did a rough score on him (not an official p&Y measure). The velvet was damaged when he fell down a hill and I am going to get it sprayed on.

My question is about the p&Y or B&C scoring. Do i wait to get the measuring done with the sprayed on velvet or do i need to get it done as it is now with no velvet??

Thanks

To get an "official" score and be entered into the books you have to wait 60 days and the skull plate has to be inspected to ensure it wasn't split. So make sure your taxidermist doesn't mount him until after he is scored.

You can have him scored either way, in velvet or hard horned. If you do it in velvet you will an asterisks by your name.( if that matters to you then do it while he's hard horned. )

Ive got a velvet and a hard horned buck in the books.

Don't try to score it after you apply the spray-on velvet. Pope and Young most likely won't recognize an animal once the horns have been manipulated (spraying on velvet) in any way.
Wait 60 days (the official drying period) and then Score it as a hard-horned buck. before you apply the synthetic velvet.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-14 AT 12:28PM (MST)[p]Lucky is right. They won't accept it as score able with the spray on velvet. You will want to get it scored hard horned
Have you ever seen a spray on velvet buck up close? I know it's all personal preference but if you haven't I would do so. I personally think it makes them look more fake in the long run. That's just me though. Let's see a picture of him.

First off, congratulations on what sounds like a fine archery mule deer. If you are considering having it measured officially, here's what you and your taxidermist need to know:

Once an animal has been legally taken, the antlers need to go through a mandatory drying period of at least 60 days. Before the drying period begins, it would be appropriate to completely clean the skull plate from any membrane or flesh. During this drying period, the antlers must remain at room temperature and normal atmospheric humidity, in an unaltered state. Unfortunately, fake velvet placed on the antlers PRIOR to official measurement is considered an alteration and will not be accepted into the records program. Simply have them measured (after 60 proper drying days) before your taxidermist adds the fake velvet.

There is no more asterisk for velvet entries and while skull plates must be intact (not broken), it is not mandatory to be inspected prior to measurement. Mounted trophies are eligible for the records program as well.

Hope it helps and good luck.

Whatever you do, don't post a picture of him here... :)

With that said... Has the synthetic "velvet" gotten better in the last couple of years..?? I've seen several bucks sprayed with that stuff, and unfortunately, none of them looked real. Ruined the whole mount in my opinion. But its been a while so maybe taxis are better with the stuff.

I hope yours turns out awesome..!! And we'd all love to see your trophy and hear a story to go with it.

Not sure what synethic velvet you guys have seen but research manakin does an absolute stellar job. I have had one buck done and will have the one I killed a week ago done after he stripped the velvet off in a long roll down the mtn. It's also important to note that your taxi will need to add detail through air brushing in veins and accents.
