As I Figured!

The 2014 SmokePole Hunt was Perty Tough for Bigger Bucks!

First 3 Days were like Hunting in July with Warmer than Normal Temperatures!

Then on the 4th Day it turned to Winter overnight!

Quite a few PISSCUTTERS but due to many,many Pre-Scouters & Feather Flippers the Bigger Bucks Wisened up Perty Good where we were Hunting!(I gotta Blame somebody!)

Passed over a ton of buck on the archery, as for the smoke pole I didn't see one buck that was legal. I will admit tho I spent most of my time watching elk in the new red field spotter. Its amazing when you can put horns on a bull at over a mile away. I have a anterless control tag for the wasatch too so I was thinking lets get a elk and go deer hunting until my other elk tag opens up. Needless to say between the weather and just bad luck I went home empty handed with plenty of nice photos of elk. I will add I love my new red field scope, its a bummer my old leupold broke but you can't win them all.

I hunted 4 days total. The first three were nice weather like stated above. I waited until this past wednesday before i got another chance at it. I called in sick at work with buck fever and headed to the mountains solo. I was able to get it done on a buck at 9:45 am. Brutal pack out of a steep canyon. I will post pics and story AFTER my rifle elk hunt is over? i ended up killing an old 3x3 here in northern utah. He had a couple kickers but broke one off during the tumble. He taped out at 28 1/8" wide with the broken kicker. He would have been pushing the magical 30" mark had he not broke. Not a buck worth scoring, just a buck with some character!

Here is my 17yr old's first muzzy buck!!!

I had both a muzzy deer and antelope tag this year for the same unit. Shot my deer around 10:30 opening morning and my antelope the afternoon of the 2nd day. I was actually putting a stalk on a heard of antelope across a few ridges from where I shot this buck when he and another buck ran across the ridge in front of me. I watched them bounce/run across the ridge and valley into the stand of quakes you can see in the picture. They never came out so I made a mental note to head that way after chasing antelope. Well the antelope fled the country and so I headed back to my truck and worked my way over towards where I watched the deer go. After parking the truck I decided I would loop down and around the trees to see if I could jump the deer. No sooner had I walked about 20 yards then the 2 bucks jumped up out of the sage and started running. I shot at the bigger of the two and double lunged him at about 55 yards. Although I didn't think I'd hit him with my shot about 4 bounces later he dropped dead in his tracks! Not the biggest buck ever, but respectable enough and I was very happy with him.

Antelope on the other hand, was a super super tough hunt! It was nearly impossible to get anywhere close to anything we saw let alone within muzzy distance. In fact, as soon as we would see any white dots out in the distance, stop and glass them up they either had us pegged and/or were running away at full speed! Never the less, I was able to get this guy by playing the wind, using the ridges to hide behind and walking/crawling a LONG way. Even then I was busted by the herd twice and nearly blew it. In the end as the does all busted out of the country for good this buck just stood there watching them run and provided me with a broadside shot which I promptly took. For the unit I was hunting I think he's a great goat, 13 1/2 inches long and great mass.

It was a little warm this year, but the skies were blue and the leaves were absolutely popping with color! What a great hunt!
