I can hardly stand it! Most of you know how long it seems from the time you get the news that you drew a great tag to the time to hunt. Finally... 3 weeks and I get to hunt! I really feel like one lucky dude. I drew two late season tags for Owyhee County, Idaho! My buck and bull seasons coincide so I will be hunting both at the same time! Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.
I posted this in the Idaho thread and wasn't getting any takers. So how about it?

I used to post on here from time to time. I hope I have some more stories to share real soon!

Don't take it personally most here are very helpful so I doubt very many here have drawn the tag.

If I could help I would but I don't know the unit other than its a good one.

Please come back and share your hunt with photos of some monster critters.

A good friend of mine has the Unit 41 late season deer tag. I will be tagging along to help out. Neither of us has hunted the unit before, so it should be interesting to see what we find. He put in for the unit based on the recommendation of a good friend from Idaho (we live in Utah). We will be following the advice of his Idaho friend to get us pointed in the right direction and then see where it goes from there. Good luck! Should be fun. We will most likely be out there the last 2 weeks of November.

Howdy, I find that hat one of the best ways to figure out where to hunt is to go to the person who is paid to know where the animals are such as the BLM's Owyhee office biologist, or the Idaho fish and game biologist that handles the area.

That's some hat trick you pulled off drawing two of the most sought after tags in the state at once. Congrats. The deer hunt is all going to depend on the weather, if we get some good early snow storms it will push the bucks out of the higher country and on there way to the winter grounds. I had that tag thirteen years ago and it was a tough hunt due to the lack of weather. The deer population and genetics down there are being destroyed year after year by the idiot F&G by allowing everyone and their dog to shoot forkies. As far as the elk, if you are fortunate enough to find the areas they hang in you should pretty much be able to whistle a stroker bull in by mouth. I think you're going to have to concentrate on one species at a time though. Hope you've done your homework and have gotten to know the unit fairly well. Good luck and don't forget to post some harvest pics!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-14 AT 11:00PM (MST)[p] Unit 41 Is Big Country. It will take many days to get an Overview. I would start on Juniper Mountain. The Buttes, Bald Mt, Rock Flat, Horse Flat. That is where I would start about 1 week before opening day. Bring a Very capable Jeep and lots of Fuel. If You are not finding much Start ranging out, Bull Basin, Owyhee canyon. Do not be surprised when you get your deer off the North Boundary Rd On the N/E edge of Juniper Mt---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. Thanks for the replies! I really appreciate the info. I'm faily familiar with the unit because while everyone and his brother put in for 40,42 and 45 and never draw, I always put in for 41 and have a reasonable chance to get a tag every few years! I tagged a beautiful 170 class buck a few years ago. I know there are some great non typicals out there and will be looking for one of those. I'll post a photo of my buck.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-14 AT 07:08PM (MST)[p]I'd be careful with a 41 tag on most of Bald Mountain and Bull basin too......

42 is included with 40 on the elk tag, but is separated as it's own unit for deer.

Powderfinger,
You are correct about unit 40-42.

My tag is only good in unit 41, per the regulations:

Hunt Area 41 ? That portion of Unit 41 west of the
West Fork Bruneau River.

Thanks for clarifying for the folks!

are you familiar with wild horse table???

I am not familiar with Wild Horse Table. What part of the unit is it in? Because I have a bull and buck tag our plan is to spend our time on the Nevada border because my understanding is that is where most of the elk in this unit are located. It looks great for deer too!

10 miles due west and 1 mile north of Grasmere....just off the north edge of wild horse table is Horseshoe reservoir....not where'd you typically look for elk, I saw a 320ish bull.....all alone. I was at that reservoir looking south into the trees and brush that ring the table...sooooo......they could be anywhere.

Funny you mention seeing elk there, we were deer hunting out there a few years ago and a buddy was up against the north edge very close to Horseshoe reservoir- maybe a little ways further west than the actual reservoir trying to push deer out of the brush. He kept saying how there was elk sign all over in there- I went up to investigate for myself and sure enough it was, pretty good amount of elk sign. Never saw any elk in there, but have wondered if there was a herd that just moved around that table... Have seen some pretty good deer around there over the years for what it's worth

That bull was right at the airplane wreckage just under that bluff above the resevoir

Thanks for the insights guys!

One year I was climbing up a pretty steep canyon to get a better vantage point of the drainage I was hunting near Grasmere. When I got to the top I came face to face with a 3/4 curl ram all by himself at about 30 yards. He gave me that "What are you doing here look" then high tailed it to the next drainage. You never know what you will see out there!
