Been a few years since I have had to work this hard, only seen a little buck and 4 does through 5 days of hunting. Finally on the 6th morning I jumped a true monster at 50 yards. He quartered back towards me and I missed him at 30 yards as he ran by through the open timber. Couldn't believe it, had to go over his tracks twice to make sure. Talk about a crazy range of emotions, he was the type of muley that most of us hunt a lifetime for and never see.
I was so pissed at my self I decided to completely change areas so I headed to the other side of the area I was hunting (couple miles and nearly 2k in total climbing). I got to where I wanted to be and was going to sit till dark.
I had great expectations for this spot from the beginning but it hadn't came through yet. As the sun hit the horizon, I figured my time was about to come to an end again. I started getting my pack together when I heard a deer running. This old boy pops out and attempts to trot by at 30 yards with no clue I was there. First shot would have been enough but if an animal is still on his feet then I keep shooting. He took 3 shots to the engine room before tipping over.
He is a great consolation muley, just wish he could have grown another year with my tag having being punched on the 1st buck :)

There are many things that would be nice to wish for or say but then I would be just like him.

Thanks guys, he is my heaviest buck.
The bigger buck looked to be a clean 4x4 too, couldn't tell the spread but his forks were considerably deeper.

Yes, steep stuff was a little difficult trying to setup for pics and get it done before dark.
Lion ate the organs and then ate his nutz plus a tiny bit of his hindquarters. Took a few pics to prove to the gamey if I got checked cause I didn't want to try and talk my way out of that deal.

Thanks Jahvea & Miguel! Good luck to both of you on your awesome hunts you got coming!

He ended up with a score of 178 3/8" (gross), so he is a few short of making book.

Hey MMan,
Hopefully that buck consoled you a bit.
He's a dandy and I love his mass.

Persistence is the only option to a miss!

I didn't have time to score him ;) but he would have likely been the best 4x4 I would have ever taken in my life. He was no WR but bigger than this fella. The body on the one I missed looked like a horse running through and his rack still stood out as unrealistic looking. Usually on those big bodied bucks, racks tend to look smaller in relation, this one didn't. Won't be back for at least 2 years to this spot, so he will either be dead or going down hill by then :)

edit- thanks again guys!

Awesome buck! I like that you kept shooting until he went down. That's the way I do it too. Sorry about the big one getting away. Monster bucks live a charmed life like that for some unknown reason:)

It's written in the good Book that we'll never be asked to take more than we can. Sounds like a good plan, so bring it on!

Great buck. Thanks for sharing...
