I'm looking to reload some rounds for my 300 win mag and just wanted everyone's opion. What grain bullet should I use 165, 180, 190? I'll be mostly hunting mule deer and elk an the occasional antelope. Thanks for the input.

Bess, you missed the Shooting Forum. As well as the Elk and Muley Forum's, the question is there too. :)

I have recently been using nosler accubonds. I really like them, shot a couple elk with them now and works well. I am using a 7mm, with 160 gr bullets. I would say 180's out of a 300 would be money!

As SMUTTY Said!

Them are Good Bullets too!

I load and love the Berger hunting VLD 168gr, with 76gr of imr 7828ssc. It shoots at 3100 fps and the BC is off the charts. I have used Berger hunting VLD's for the past 3 years and they are the only bullet I will shoot. They perform excellent in every caliber I have tried from .25 thru .30.

all of those will kill a deer or elk !! But will your rifle spit them out in any kind of a decent group ?? I would load a few of each & go to the range & see how they shoot !! My 300 mag shoots 150 grain shells the best & has killed lope bears bucks bulls & cows & I have never had to put a 2nd round in any of them !!!

I'm shooting 185gr Berger VLDs out of my .300WM. Love them. Great accuracy and superb knock down power. Killed 3 antelope (500yds, 430yds, 350yds), 1 Muley (350yds) and 1 elk (50yds) all with 185gr VLDs... All one shot, one kill.

190 berger. substantial increase in BC over the 185 for small increase in weight, decrease in velocity.

knock down power! knock down power! knock down power! knock down power! knock down power!

Can't wait for REDDOG to Chime in on the "KNOCKDOWN" Power Comment!

It is the most flexible caliber (30) so why limit yourself?? Mine shoots 110-220 just fine, cous deer to moose. It likes 180's the best though if you just have to be boring. The KNOCKDOWN POWER of a 180 @ over 3000 fps is amazing.

If you load the 110's do not go with the round nose fmj for a 30 carbine. They disintegrate at 4000 fps as they leave the barrel...

I use the same bullet for deer, elk, and antelope so I don't need to think twice about distance and drop. I would suggest the larger bullet (possibly 180) which will be best for elk and also work for other species. I like Nosler Partitions. If you have the time and $ it may be worth trying a few different types of 180s until you find one that shoots the best in your particular rifle. I've always had great success with the partitions so haven't needed to look at others.

For elk, I use 180's mostly but I always carry some 220's that I use in thicker areas where there is a chance to hit a little brush when shooting. I would go down to 165's for deer if I were to use my 300. I shot a deer with a 220 many years ago and it made a mess. I hit ribs going in and it blew chunks of bone through the diaphram and tore up the guts and hit ribs going out and made a huge exit hole. I can't imagine the mess in the guts if it was a little further back or what it would have done to the shoulders if it was a little further forward. My 300 is my favorite gun but I use my 270 for deer now.

Mine loves 165gr Interbonds. Tried 5-6 different weights and brands but it shoots these best. Like most said, each gun shoots different rounds differently. Really the best thing to do is load several of multiple kinds (or buy boxes of each) and shoot away.

Mine shoots the factory 180 gr Hornady Interbonds well. As several other said, load a few and see what works best.

On a related subject, I read on one of the bullet manufacturers sites they don't recommend anything greater than 180 gr for the 300 WM. Had something to do with the length and the necking of the bullet. I wish I could provide a link to where I read that so I could substantiate it. But, since the 180's work well in my 300 WM, I didn't bother to remember where I saw it.

Forgot to add, I've killed several mule deer, whitetail deer, and antelope with this bullet. And one elk at 350 yards. Broadside shot and the bullet stopped against the far hide. 156 grains, or 87% retention.

Good luck!

3-4 Bullets are Perfect for the 300 win Mag. In my Opinion: 150gr Nosler Partition, 165-168gr Nosler Ballistic tip, 200gr Nosler Partition. Why stick with one load when you can have fun working up 3 and all the range time involved. I have not had much success with the 180gr weight in any 300 win mag. Or with Accubonds of any weight.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

I mainly shoot the 165 gr. Barnes TTSX loaded with 66.0 grains of H4350 with a federal Gold Match Primer in my 300 WSM. It doesn't like anything heavier. The most accurate bullet out of my rifle and works fine for deer is the Sierra 155 Palma Match with the same load. Wouldn't shoot this bullet at an elk. Tried them on a mule deer this year. Behind the shoulder entry and left a 2" hole out the other side. Deer went about 5 yards.

Every rifle likes something different and it will also depend on the twist of your barrel.

I have great luck with 180 grain bullets.
I have really liked accubond, and swift scirocco ii.
