Utah Deer and 16 NR Pts!

What to do? For many years I've gathered points thinking that someday I'd pull the trigger on a Pauns archery deer tag, but now I'm not so sure.

Any thoughts? I know the Henrys is where its at right now, but with 1 NR tag, that is a random draw tag. A buddy suggested that I put in for the Henrys Management hunt, but there is still only 1 tag for that, right? I don't care what weapon I hunt with, I just want a quality hunt and a great time!!

I hope I don't ever have to wait 16 years to draw a Utah tag. I waited 10 and it would really suck to wait THAT long again. Why don't you put in for a hunt you have much better odds of drawing?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-14 AT 11:53PM (MST)[p]It looks like Henry Management had 3 non-res tags this year (2014) and if you would have put in for it, you would have been the only 16 point holder and the highest point holder for that 1 bonus tag. I assume you had 15 points for this year's draw though and even then, you would have had approximately a 33% chance to draw that 1 bonus tag. The last 5 years on this unit has had at least 2 tags available and 1 of those being a bonus tag for high point holder.

You can also look at the San Juan Elk Ridge unit as well. The rifle tag has had a bonus tag in the last 5 years and at 16 points, Based on previous history, you'd be high point holder or in the same pool with a couple other people as well. Your chances wouldn't be too bad. This is a great unit on the archery hunt but it seems to be a bit tougher on the rifle hunt. Sadly, as a non-res you don't have a ton of great options because of the few amount of tags available on most of these units. Archery hunts seem to be all random draws because they only have 1 tag available. If you want to hunt soon, I'd go with either the Henry Management or San Juan Elk Ridge rifle tag.

+2 SJ OR Henry's management.

Even though it is a random draw tag your chances increase with each BP you have, right? I know that your chances would still kinda suck but i'm just making sure I understand this correct.

For the San Juan Archery tag, assuming these numbers I am looking at are correct, and I have no reason to believe they would be incorrect, with 15 points as a non-res for San Juan Archery the odds were 3.8%. 14 points is 3.6%, 13 is 3.4%. These numbers are based on the amount of people who applied for this tag in the 2014 drawing.

So while having more chances in the pot with more bonus points is technically true, it is a very small increase in odds. Having no bonus tags for the archery hunt decimates your draw odds compared to the hunts that actually have bonus tags.

Thanks for the input guys! You've given some good info and I appreciate that! Going to look hard at these suggestions.

For years I have been waiting to draw out on another tag. An Az archery elk tag which I did draw this year. Since you have to apply to Utah before knowing if I drew the other permit, I always just got a point for Utah. Its that simple. Now its time.

I have 18 NR points. If you decide on the Pauns archery I'd try to get it in 2015 because I'll be putting in for it in 2016. I never intended to accumulate so many points, but SFW kept stealing NR tags & opportunity over all those years. And also I drew other tags in other states which caused me to postpone burning the UT points.

Whatever you decide to do, TipM, I hope you are happy with it and have a great hunt. I drew a LE tag a couple years ago and didn't hold out for a big buck and I was ok with it. I had a blast on the hunt and I wouldn't have done it any other way. Good luck!

I was in the same boat last year with 16 points as a non resident. I am 65 years old and tired of the points game. I just want to hunt. I opted for the Henry Management Hunt and had a ball.
Mainly, just enjoyed the experience of hunting in an area where there were so "many" good bucks to look at and photo. I met a lot of nice people.
I would warn you it can be frustrating. There are many bucks that look to be great management bucks, but we found most of them have cheaters that can be hard to see. I killed a decent buck but we saw some real toads.
