Going into the 2015 Arizona draw I have 15 bonus points for deer and 16 for sheep. Other than waiting for the sometimes accurate data via The Huntin Fool magazine which does not come out until June, how do I acquire the odds to draw for 12A or 12B west late units? I need to know how many non residents drew those units in 2014 and how many total bonus points they had in order to draw. Even the Arizona regulations do not list this useful data - only the total number of applicants respective to each unit. If anybody knows who I may contact at AZGFD to obtain this inof it would be appreciated. Also any advice from anyone who has hunted those units would be helpful.

This should be in the Arizona Forum.

Its kind of complicated. And from free public information you cannot get the exact exact answer that I am aware of. I'll try to lead you to water here;) You have to have first go to the 2014 regs and get the specific hunter numbers that you are interested in.

Start off by looking at this picture:

Only 145 of the 963 people with 15 or more points are resident, I would guess that very few residents in that pool are using them on the kaibab, (most are waiting for strip tag). So if you use that info, you can use the following to surmise your Kaibab chances. Remember only 10% of tags can go to nonresidents. (This is supposed to change some in 2016 fyi)

This is the route website where you get the info:

Bonus Point Pass:

1st and 2nd Choice random draw round pass:

In my opinion, if you are a talented hunter, hunt the entire hunt, and have a guide, you should have very good chances at least to get a 180 class buck. If you take any of those variables out, chances start to go down. Maybe 5 to 10% of the deer harvested on these hunts exceed 185? Alot of it is weather based however, some years you see 30 bucks a day, some years you are hard pressed if weather is super warm etc. Just my opinions based on what I've experienced, seen, heard.
Good Luck! May the odds be ever in your favor. Ty

Ty,
Thank you for this information. I assume you are Ty Goodman?
The http addresses you listed aare very long. Do I need to enter all those characters and numbers to access the data?

If that doesn't work, hold down the "CTRL" button and click on them. If that doesn't work, just highlight one of the links in its entirety, right click on the mouse, push copy, click into a new window for the internet to open a new page, click in the address bar, right click, push the paste option, hit enter.

Ty,
Yep - got the info. As you stated, it's hard to get strictly the non resident info from those charts. But it gives me a better idea of odds to draw based on my points.
Apparently this is where The Huntin Fool is getting the data for their magazine. Once again public information free on each respective state game and fish web site if one knows how to dig deep enough. Huntin Fool publishes the same for $100 - $200/year for a "membership".

Do you have the Hunter Ed point yet if not that will help ?

I have 16 NR points (one ahead of you) going into this year and have been putting in for 12AW Late with no luck.
Arizona Odds are very hard to figure out but best I can tell it could take many years to go through all in my point group. The 12B hunts may be easier to draw but I"m not sure.
Good Luck

Check out Hunters Trailhead website, for a reasonable fee it will give you the draw odds you are looking for, they used to do it for free on this forum. Looks like you will have a better chance at 12B West Late

What about the fence the Arizona Hwy Dept put in three years ago on Az Hwy Alt. 89? Is that having a significant impact on the deer migration from the Paunsagunt in Utah down into Arizona?

I hunted the 12BW early hunt in 2013. During that hunt all of the deer were piled up along the Utah side of the fence. My dad had the tag and did not fill it because there were very few deer which had figured out how to cross under the highway to get to the AZ side. I dont know if they are getting crossed in time for the late hunt. The fence certainly did have an effect on the amount of deer on the 12B side last year.

The fence is on the Utah side of 89 and if I remember correctly is only a 12 mile section. The first year it was in place deer were stacking up against the fence in confusion and reluctant to use the new underpasses. From what I saw this year the deer seemed to have adjusted for the most part. I watched several different groups of deer (about 50 deer total) walk down the fence line until they got to one of the underpasses and move through without much hesitation. I did see one little 2x3 that would not use the under pass, after approaching the underpass 3 different times in about a half hours time he finally turned back and headed north.

I hunted 12 a late this year and I had 19 points as a nonresident to draw. hunted every day and never saw a buck in 180's. very little rut activity. saw small deer biggest in the 170's. Last four days had 8 guides and we could not locate a big deer to look at.

Tough hunt

Wow muledeer67, I seriously apologize on behalf of Arizonans for your lackluster hunt. That is rough after using your points! The highest non-res last year was only 17 points I thought, since this year it is 18...

I drew 12aw late 2014 with 16 non-res.points which was 1 shy of max. Had a blast on my DIY hunt, passed on several good bucks before taking a 32" 4?5.The bucks are there if you're willing to put in the work to find them.

sorry AZ4life I had 16 my typing leaves a lot to be desired. Disappointed I will never get that tag again but not in the hunt. Have wanted to see and hunt the Kaibab for many years after hunting the Paunsagaunt a few times.

I hunted with Duane Adams. Would recommend him anytime. as I said the last four days he rounded up a lot of guides trying to find a big deer I was looking for.

If you enjoyed the Kaibab you should look into the archery hunt, I've been archery hunting it off and on since I was 14, killed a good 4pt when I was 16, several w a rifle (I am an az resident) and finally killed a toad with my bow in 2014! The arc hunt has gotten better and better since it went to a draw and I'd say is the best way for a non resident to have several opportunities to hunt the Kaibab! Personally I like the archery hunt better than the general season hunt!
That being said we saw a couple real good bucks on my dad's late rifle hunt this year!

a friend of mine drew archery in 2012 with 15 non-resident points if that helps

I looked at my point totals and actually have 16 deer points and 17 sheep points going into the draw. Which hunt is better? 12 A West late or 12 B West late? Does one need a guide to be successful? Is it possible to stay at the Jacob Lake Inn and hunt from there?
Hey all you northern Arizona deer hunters please advise and help.

12aw is always a solid bet because u can hunt them high or low, I have seen some of the biggest bucks of my life in 12b during the late hunts, but weather is a huge factor. If u have time to take a couple trips ahead of time and learn the lay of the land I'd go DIY, personally I get more from killing a 180 buck DIY than I would killing a 200" buck w a guide, just the way I'm dialed!
If u want to go guided look up john Adams w hpo, he is a good dude and got his client a 200"+ buck on the late West side hunt this year!

I always see lots of chatter here about 12AW but here to tell you I think most will be disappointed if you hope for a 180". I think there are many hunts in Colorado you can draw with 3/5 points as good or better. We hunted 12AW in 2013 right across canyon from Duane Adams. Same deer. Several other outfitters w/posses swarming around too. Everyone including me were having same results, passing 160-170's waiting for something better that did not show. Just be realistic. Very long time to wait for a mediocre hunt.
