Howdy all. Does anyone here have experience with the country between Miles City and the Charles M. Russell refuge? How diverse is the herd? Many whitetails about the region? I was wondering what kind of access a fella can expect to the public ground. I understand there are some block management areas in region 7 as well. How does that work? Thanks!

Herd is dying due to over hunting/over harvest, disease, and a series of very hard late falls, winters, and early springs. Thankfully MTFWP discontinued all doe tags (except whitetail in R7) and went to antlered buck MD for a general tag. Access is bad and is pounded by non residents from ND, SD, and MN, with more and more hunters filtering in from Bakken Oil Field Development. You can look up Block Mgmt from MTFWP's site. I'd stay out of MT and go to CO or NM.

Don't listen to the negative people. There are good deer to be had. They aren't around every corner and you'll have to hunt hard, but you can shoot a nice deer. Between myself and two buddies that hunt together we have shot 5 good deer in the last three years.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-15 AT 04:55PM (MST)[p]Thanks Carnage. Sounds like there may be some good hunting there at that. I don't expect wallhangers in every draw. Just looking for an enjoyable hunt in some beautiful country.
