Another buck poached

The laws need to be changed to reflect the seriousness of these crimes. Poaching should be a felony with mandatory time. There should be no pleading down to a lesser charge. Levying a stiff legal and financial price hopefully will deter these SOB.

I think making a viewer complete a survey to read the content of the article should be treated as a felony extortion crime with the stiffest of penalties. :D

Eldorado,

Sadly i would not be surprised if these guys are caught and then faced with a minimal fine and loss of a few years of hunting rights. When a guy gets busted for drug possession do we say. Ok, sir, you are not allowed to have drugs anymore and assume that he will obey? Stripping hunting rights from poachers is a joke. They have shown no regard for hunting rules in the first place, why would this ever deter them!!

As sportsmen, we need to demand real enforcement and real punishment. Poachers are taking trophy bucks at a price that is cheaper than a law abiding hunter investing in preference points and saving up a few thousand for a low odds draw trophy quality fair chase hunt.

Other than serving time, paying steep fines and having your property confiscated what else can you do to them short of hanging them?

Hunthigh, you make an interesting point about stripping hunting rights from poachers. I've wondered how effective that is myself.

I agree with stiffer fines and penalties but be realistic!

I think many have a very romanticized view of our court system. It may be the best in the world or maybe not so much anymore but it is very flawed.

Go here and read this, best info is in state towards the bottom of the page.

I'm guessing from the many burglaries occurring now in my county and how few convictions there is even when dirtbags are caught in the home, that property crime statistics are even worse or better if you are a criminal.

Truth be told of the individuals caught poaching the conviction rate is probably better.

My guess is very ineffective, think of how much we all enjoy hunting. Is there anything you would give it up for? I can only think of a couple reasons...

If you were framed for a big poaching case tomorrow and flat railroaded all the way to conviction, would you give up hunting even if the sentence was to never hunt again?

Be honest with your answer. I think I would keep hunting barring some kind of real threat of getting caught and losing my freedom as in prison.

Today it is too easy to get away with so the threat or risk of being caught is unfortunately low.

Bill, you bring up a good point. I live near you in a town of 24,000, same demographics as your town. Our poor little justice system is overwhelmed. Just one day, the arrest record was...

Saturday, Jan. 31:

18 felonies, 19 misdemeanors, 0 infractions

This happens all day, every day.

Most are out walking the streets before this report gets printed. To demand jail time for a wildlife violation would probably be laughed at, and probably over turned on appeal, which costs even more money.

It's written in the good Book that we'll never be asked to take more than we can. Sounds like a good plan, so bring it on!

Let's see:
-In my city we have 4 child molesters out living in the community.
-We have a dude that has been convicted of drunk driving 4 times.
-We have a guy walking the streets waiting on a rape trial.

While I like the idea of nailing poachers, guess what? There are more pressing matters out there.

Several years ago Utah had 200,000 plus deer hunters in the field. Today, what 100,000
Lots of folks wanting to hunt, and looking to shoot a deer.

Be vigilant, turn people in, and encourage others to do the same.
Not sure what else can be done.

Not sure what you are asking DW. But if you are talking arrests it may be due to less emphasis by various dept.s on getting them and therefore more officers letting the borderline guys off with a warning??? Just a guess I dont KNOW how these things work but I do see up and down trends in arrests for various crimes at various times.

If you are talking convictions I don't know?

Then again maybe the message is sinking in?????

I can tell you why DUI dropped here. You remember that probation stuff everybody said doesn't do anything??? Well they started giving everybody here probation and part of the terms was you have to go to AA meetings. Even people that aren't alcoholics had to go. And your probation isn't final until the leader at AA says your done. In college towns the DUI rate just climbs its a serious business there.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-15 AT 03:49PM (MST)[p]Partial answer to DW's question, i flat quit drinking 17 years ago because of a drunk driving conviction and the resulting penalties, including a weekend in jail, that i had to go thru. I said i'd never put myself in that position again and the only way that i could do that was to quit. A weekend in County Jail was HUGE to me to sit thru, then there was the Community service and costly classes. I think DWI convictions might be down because a lot of potential offenders have already got caught and like me, they don't do that at all anymore or at least, nowhere near as often as they once did .

I think Poaching is a lot more prevalent than most people realize. We hear about the huge bucks that get popped but we don't hear of all the smaller bucks and does that get taken out of season or without getting tagged for meat purpose. The guys shooting these deer have been doing it for years and years, they feel it is their right to take a deer when they want one.

The times of the good ol boy getting slack from those that know what's going on, needs to have been put in the past. There just are not the numbers of deer around that there used to be. Those remaining need to be protected.

Caught Poachers need to be given sentences that hurt hard in one way or another. To me, loss of hunting privileges for years would be a huge deterrent but i'm not a poacher running around that just don't care one way or the other.

Bingo tri and sage! It's the $10-15k it takes to complete the program! Higher insurance rates, the blow and go, attorneys fees, classes, loss of license for a year, probation etc etc! My dad used to tell of the days getting pulled over drunk and the cop's following him home and telling him if they see him out again that night he's goin to jail! Those days are over! Taking away a criminals right to hunt will not stop him from poaching. Cleaning out his gun cabinet, his pockets, and putting him afoot will!
