A lot is written about Unit 44 but are there other units I should be looking at? Or should I wait a few more years to let 44 recover more? I am 58 and this will be my last draw in Colorado in my life time and looking for a good deer. A chance at a 180 deer would be great(not sure a 200 is real)

Thanks in advance

Just keep waiting so I can have a shot at 44 Haha just kidding. Honestly 44 is looking as good as it ever has in the last 7 years or so... However the season dates and moon phases are not looking favorable for the 2015. In a nut shell it's a crap shoot and who can ever predict the hand you will be delt on a given hunt. 44 would be my top pick.. Other units to consider would be 66 third, 55 fourth, 22 fourth and 61 third.

I was in Unit 10 a couple times this last Fall & JUDAS!

It sure Ain't what it once was!

180+ is a real possibility in any of the units coloradoboy mentioned. 21 points lucky dog. Good luck hope you have a good hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-15 AT 09:08PM (MST)[p]I had the same points you have, but I cashed them in 3 years ago. I had favorable rut dates and got lucky connecting with a dandy buck. Coloradoboy makes a great point about the dates and when the rut starts. He is also right that if the early weather doesn't cooperate, you can still have tough going. I too would wait if you can for later season openers. But you are in a great position to find a dandy even if you go for it this year.
Best of luck

Colorado makes this decision a no brainer. Draw 44 4th season. Scout a week before and turn your tag in if you don't see what you want.

66 is overrated - that said, a 180 is possible there on public land. Personally, I would favor the 3rd season with nine days to hunt over the 4th with only five days to hunt. You're going to need those 4 extra days, more than likely. If you have the patience, the dates will be better in 2016.

Everything thing is overrated if you don't find what your looking for.... There is no golden unit in this state. I have grown up, guided and still live in western colorado and I've seen large bucks in about every unit that has been tossed around monster muleys whether it be a coveted draw tag, "overrated unit" or 2nd choice unit. There is no "golden" unit in this state and we all know its hunting in the end. Those who know it will place 44 high on the list but its still no cake walk. Especially this past year with the lack of snow and unfavorable moon phases. Ive seen the rise and fall of the Gunnison basin and along with places like units 21 and 10. And even 44 with that being said. Mule deer are on a downward trend statistically all across the western US and its bothersome to many of us. I am a young buck and have seen many less moons than many here. The few I have seen, have been spent in the heart of Colorado's mule deer mecca and reaching back in my memory bank into the 90's and early to mid 2000's things are not even close to what they used to be as we all know. Hopefully its something that will cycle back but it seems doubtful at times with history of mule deer populations being so strong throughout the west for so long leading up to the last decade. I often times cant contain my jealousy when my grandfather, dad, and uncles sit around and talk about the "good ol' days" when going out and killing a 180ish buck wasn't that big of a deal on opening weekend of season.

21 points for a NR to get a 22 4th season tag? As bessy would say....JFP!!!!

How many points does a 22 3rd season tag take for a NR or is point creep getting worse every year?

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

IN 22 it took 7 points for a 3rd season and 19 for a 4th season last year.

Turning you tag back in if you can't turn up a good buck has one problem: If you do, you will get your points back but NOT one for this year, so you would go in to the draw this year with 21 and you would only get 21 back (not one for this year)
