Thoughts on 2015 Numbers

even if the deer herd is better why in the hell raise the tag#s just to dwindle the deer herd again?

Great thinking DWR!

O--one
B--big
A--ass
M--mistake
A--america

I have done the Muzzy hunt in that North Slope area several different years. Its the most beautiful time of year to be up there, and its about the only time of year to see the elk that appear to be thriving...

The deer, not so much. It is a mostly heavily timbered area that provides the animals with a lot of cover, making it hard to locate them. As the DWR indicated, the deer move over into Wyoming into areas that have little to no cover. The WY hunt in that area is probably pretty good. I just don't see the deer heard as being quite healthy enough...

Now, if they took those additional rifle tags OUT of the total rifle tags for that area, then I wouldn't mind the idea.

2000 more buck tags? They must be afraid some of the bucks might live to be 3 years+ old. We couldn't have that.

It's written in the good Book that we'll never be asked to take more than we can. Sounds like a good plan, so bring it on!

Seriously we wouldn't want a respectable number of mature bucks in the herd so they can breed the doe's, that's crazy talk.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Hey, improvement is always good and adding 2000 tags isn't exactly wiping out the herd.

I, too, wish that the deer hunt was even way-more limited (fewer tags, fewer hunters) but that's pretty selfish of me when not everyone care as much about the "bone".

We all dance to a different drum-beat.

More orange on the mountain means, more pressure and more movement. If there are somewhat mature bucks in that area, they will recognize the pressure and move sooner.

My concern is that they increased the number of LE tags. Does anyone know what LE units received the increases?

WAIT...... You mean to tell me with the passing of Opt 2 we are increasing the deer tags in Utah? This must be completely wrong??? Even if it was suggested the SFW would NEVER allow the state to increase deer permits.

Some will never be satisfied until the golden goose lay dead!!!

Zeke's thoughts are appreciated.

I think its a stretch to say 2000 additional tags spread across the state are going to reverse any trends A 3% increase in tags is a good thing if its reflective of an improving population.

Zion unit is 6000 deer over objective and growing by 1000 deer/yr. 40%+ success rate, consistently above b/d objective. The southern rac proposes an additional 3 tags as a reply to the DWR's proposal of 110 tag increase (less than a fraction of a 1% increase). A 3 tag increase is a joke and not worthy of debate.

SFW and trophy interests should have been more honest when proposing opt 2 of their intentions. Their idea of opt 2 really is when a unit is struggling, we can more easily cut tags on that unit. Conversely when a unit is increasing, we can more easily cut tags on that unit.

Trophy interests win again!!! Meat hunters need to stay home!!

Muley 73,

Read the Southern RAC minutes. True to their colors, SFW voiced opposition to increases even where numbers justified an increase. The Southern RAC ignored cold-hard numbers, bought into trophy emotion, and settled for a 3-tag increase on Zion. Not exactly a golden goose from my point-of-view.

You don't need to be so mocking. SFW is doing its best at working its exclusive hunter magic through Option 2.

everyone I've talked to hasn't seen the 30% herd increase on the Zion in the past 4 years. I think those numbers are way off.
Ten years ago they said that there were 300 elk on the Zion and now there's about 350. I would safely bet that there is double that many elk. Maybe the deer counters were seeing elk calf and bighorn sheep tracks instead of a lot more deer tracks within their plots.

There's always next year
