General Archery - Shooter?

I feel silly posting the question of is this a shooter buck on a general Utah archery tag, especially for the unit he is on. If I had a tag there would be no second guess.

Last night, I took my 11-year old to his first overnight with a scout troop. We camped along side 5 other camps all with archery tag holders. They were all hunting high.

About 2 miles before camp (in the foothills) we saw three bucks cross the road in front of us. I scrambled for the camera and got a couple pictures.

It hard to see but he has a 2-3" cheater of his right G3 and is a tall 4 x 3. The left side G3 had some cheaters starting. I think he's a great buck on a non limited entry unit and he'll be an absolute stud if he makes it to next year.

Yep, a taker if you ask me. If I found a better buck, I might not pursue this one, but if he offered a shot, I think I'd be launching. It's easy to "talk" about passing bucks, but shots at great archery bucks come by very seldom.
If he's the best you've seen, or close, then get after him. He's cool.

PS - Passing on a buck to save him for the next year is foolish in my opinion. Never assume they'll come back bigger, or even be back the next year, or that you'll get a chance. Bucks do not always get bigger as they get older.

I am surprised by your PS comment. I must be the most foolish person on here. For me, The sun rises and sets all year long just so I can see the bucks I saw the year before. Respectfully letmgetbig.

It's a personal choice and depends on many variables. In my opinion it's better to pass the opportunity and know you could have rather than shoot and regret it later. Many will shoot just because they're scared to go home empty handed. They care too much about what others think.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-15 AT 09:21AM (MST)[p]letmgetbig, i agree with you, but then i did a lot of my best hunting on large tracks of private land year after year with very limited access. Founder has been hunting public land, as you know, that gets pounded by the masses so i can see where he's coming from too.

edit; +1 idsharp! Welcome! I've said many times that some of my best hunts, i came home empty.
