Not looking for any secrets. Just some information. This years deer opener has got me a little worried. It is the earliest a deer rifle season will open in Utah. I know the book cliffs is a migration hunt, and I've been told the latter end of the hunt is the best time to be there, with all the deer moving down. This year the second weekend (will be the opening weekend next year) is so early. Not to mention the warm fall so far. Will the deer still be up high? Will they be in the 35 miles of pinion between the top and the winter ground??? Has anyone been out lately? What should I expect? Hopefully they will be down where I hunted it in 2000. Any ideas? Thanks for any reply.

This year will probably not be very different than every other year. The deer will be spread between the "top" and their "winter range". It is likely that the bigger bucks are hiding out a bit but they will definitely start to move during the hunt...

My advice is this: If you see anything smaller than 160", let it walk... Until about Thursday or Friday. :) And if you can hold out until Saturday of the second weekend, you may just be rewarded with a wiley old buck that stayed high as long as he felt comfortable...

I think they will be in their normal spots down low. All it takes is one evening drive and you will know what level the deer are at.

On my nephew's hunt several years ago it was hot and balmy on opening weekend but the majority of the deer were down low in the P/J.

Big bucks will make themselves scarce until the rut starts to kick in.
I'd look in out of the way places very early and staying until dark.

Best of luck

Thanks for the input guys feeling better now Will be heading out tomorrow. Hopefully we have a good, fun, safe hunt. If it works out good I hope we can kill some crazy big deer. Thanks again for your help this summer/fall and input.
