Did I make a mistake???

I passed this buck up this morning at 35 yards.
In the back of my mind I know that my big buck is still alive and I have a chance at him.

What do you think? I was thinking 175" range.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-15 AT 08:22PM (MST)[p]It's only a mistake if you're regretting it.
175 is a great buck, but if you had your heart set on a 180" then no, you didn't screw up.
Can't shoot a 180" or better if you shoot a 170" first ;-)

I think your pretty close on score, if you want a 190 you made the right choice. In the vast majority of units in most states that's a shooter all day though.

In your shoes, once i stuck or shot a huge buck that i couldn't find, my season would be devoted to either refinding that buck or punching my tag. I don't believe a tag should allow a guy to possibly cripple two, three, or four deer until he finally gets one on the ground.

You asked, i don't think you made a mistake at all. Good luck refinding the bruiser in your pre-season threads!

A bird in the hand...

I haven't killed enough good deer to pass something like that up. But. having followed your hunt from the beginning, I commend you for holding out for The Big One.

Good call on passing him up, I don't even see 170 on that buck. His backs are just too short, either way he needs another year at least.

If you're looking for something bigger...then no. Hopefully if you don't see anything bigger, you'll run into him later. He's a really nice mature buck, that's for sure. I would say he's close to the 170 mark.

I'd already be eating his backstraps.

I have until the first week of January to get a tag on my big buck.

Hes down on private which I have permission on (the only one with permission). I will put in my time and get him!!

I'd say these statements are your answer, and would probably change the answers of others. Good luck!
