Turning in Mule Deer Tags

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-15 AT 10:25AM (MST)[p]What do you think of this change? This is Colorado's proposed change and how will it effect you. I will use unit 44 3rd rifle season for example. This year 4 non residents where picked ranging from 20 pps to I think 17 points. If they were to turn in their tags they would get a refund and those tags would not be re-issued. The proposed change would only allow you to turn in your tag 30 days prior to the hunt. Those tags that get turned in will go over to the leftover tag group and be issued on a first come first served basis, instead of offering the tag to the next person in line who put in for the tag but was unsuccessful. I have a contact if you want to be heard.

It is good and bad. It is good because we will have more opportunity for all hunters when the tag is turned in. However the first come first serve idea is horrible for the top units and top tags.

As resident this has really bothered me... I will not be surprised if the good tags all end up in the hands of CPW staff or relatives of such. Or I draw a good tag and turn it in, I would have my friend online trying to get said tag right away.

The issue really only evolves around the top tags and a very small number of hunt codes per species. I had written the CPW and requested they make the tags requiring 5 points or more go to the next guy in line mentality. Then on tags requiring less that 5 points go to the left over list.

Another thought was have all hunters enter an additional draw for a few dollars. Then in this draw it places all hunters in line for left over tags. At the 30 day prior mark, all returned tags will be listed and the guy in front of the line can look at the list and select a tag. then the second guy etc.

I applaud the CPW for listening to sportsmen and reissuing the tags, I however hate the fact that reissuing is simply first come first serve and I can guarantee that when a 17 point plus tag is returned, it will not simply show up for all of us to have a shot, instead it will be sold before it is every listed.

>Whats the definition of first come
>first serve? The tag
>should go to the guy
>next in line.

All Colorado tags go onto the left over list. First come first serve is the person who get into the computer system first and buys it....

Tag pops up 5 people try for it and he who has the fastest internet and fingers wins.

This is such a bad idea for high end units. It is probably fine for the low point units. I would have preferred they did not do this for units that take more than 10 points or go to the next in line or go to someone with 10 points and make them use their points! This does nothing to help point creep...someone could get 44 4th without using a point...heck it might be likely!

It's not a proposal, it was approved. There was almost no discussion about it at the Commission meeting and zero sportsmen testifying in support or opposition. Rubber stamp.

The part that I don't like is Unit 44 3rd season takes somewhere between 17 and 20 years of stockpiling preference points. Someone decides he doesn't want the tag turns it in and that tag goes to the leftover tag group. Do you guy's realize how hard it is to get a leftover tag when literally thousands of people are trying to get online at the same time. It overloads the system and you can't get thru to purchase the tag you want. And with the track record Colorado has in the past with tag fiasco's it won't surprise me if this system gets all screwed up.

Could this help point creep? If me and 3 friends had 20 points. And we put in for a 4th season 10 point unit. And scouted his unit rite before the season opened. Than turned our tags in. What does that do to point creep? I am sure this does happen every year....

It absolutely happens every year. I think the 30 day window will alleviate almost all of that scenario, which is a good thing and will help point creep. I think the unknown is how many tags will get turned in 30+ days prior to the season starting due to the new rules. I bet its less than folks think it will be.

Besides, I doubt many folks will even know or understand the new rules. The hardcore folks here and other sites make up a very small percentage of the hunting population, especially in Co.

17-20 ppts means hunting is about done in already, some just refuse to admit it.

cmbbulldog, I think your assessment is right on. The 30 day prior to opening day is a good rule.

Who puts the tag back into the system?

What's to stop someone from giving away or selling their tag by informing someone of when they will turn it in?

The mountains, not the hills.

So what happen if two or three guys. Put in for a ten point unit. With there 17 to 20 points. And they scout and see nothing. That they want to shoot. Whats that do for point creep?

Well they would have to scout more than 30 days prior to the season.... What has been happening is people get tags and scout the week before the hunt, then turn their tag in if the weather isn't good, not enough snow, cant find a big buck, ect. 30+ days out, people will have no idea if there will be any snow to help their hunt.

Nothing. Although you are taking somewhat of a gamble, because there could be someone else online to pick up the tag before the "buyer".
