Bad folks chasing deer.

I was out photographing deer on Friday.
The snow flew most of the day and there was no one out there but my friend and I.

We had parked the vehicle and hiked out to a draw that normally holds many deer.

We had been there for a couple hours, filming deer from across the draw, half a mile away.

At the end of the day, we heard snow mobiles.
That was odd since this area of Wyoming is closed to ATV and snowmobiles.
Every year you see guys shed hunting on ATVs even though the area is closed, and I had seen snow mobile tracks in years past, but never actually seen anyone on sleds in there.

The sad thing was, there were two guys on snowmobiles, who looked to be older than I am, and I am over 40, they were chasing deer on their snow mobiles!
I couldn't believe it. I even watched one guy stop, glass with his binoculars, and then pursue deer!

Why?

It was pretty shocking to watch folks who seemed to be interested in deer, doing this.

I believe that most of us try to give deer as much space as we can, and still enjoy them.
We try not to even let them know we are there.

There was one particular group of deer that had about 60 - 70 deer in it.
It had a handful of nice bucks mixed in there. I was particularly disgusted when these folks ran these deer 1.7 miles, ( I looked it up on google earth) through the snow before the chase ended only because one of the sleds broke down.

There is no cell service, and the time it took me to walk back to the vehicle, and drive out to a road was long enough that the snowmobiles would be long gone by the time a fish cop arrived on scene.
So, I felt as though I could do nothing.

Through the spotter I tried to find some identifying markings on the sleds. Some registration numbers, state decals, but none were to be found from the distance away that I was.

I just had to watch these two "men" drive the deer through the snow.

The aftermath was terrible.

I digiscoped this little deer who had lost its mother in the mass confusion.
Warning, the video is pretty upsetting to watch. Watching this deer franticly look in circles for its mother, now all alone on the range.

I have never seen a deer do that. I actually began filming this behavior after it had gone on for about 10 minutes. It continued after I had stopped filming it.

On my way out, I went past the area where the snowmobilers had chased the deer.
I found handfuls of deer scattered across the area, and came across a site that was concerning.
This is that site.

One of the bucks that I had just spent a couple hours watching. Was he dead? I have watched many deer sleep on the winter range. None like that. We sat there and watched through the spotting scopes for a long time, waiting to see if the snowmobilers had run him to death.
Waiting to see if he moved, or showed signs of life.

After a while, an ear twitched. He was alive. Luckily.

Once we got back to the road and wet headed out, we looked for a parked truck with an empty snow mobile trailer, in order to get a plate number. Nothing.
Never found any trucks at all.

The behavior is terrible, add to that the area is closed to ATV and OHV traffic, and these folks clearly have no regard for the wildlife.

Typical snowmobilers don't have binoculars strapped around the neck and ride in areas that are open to snowmobiles. They ride in areas with deep snow, where the machines won't be damaged by rock and brush. These folks seemed to be there because of the deer. They seemed to be prepared for looking at deer.

I hope I never see then again, but if I do, I will be filming them. I will be turning the film over to the Wyoming game warden.
Too bad there is not much else I can do.

That's pretty upsetting. I'm also surprised that anyone would be riding around on snowmobiles with that little amount of snow on the ground. Most of us that snowmobile would never be in areas like that because it can cause some expensive damage to the sleds. Just not worth it. Either these guys had some old beat up sleds they didn't care about, or is it possible that F&G was out doing some kind of winter survey. I would think they would always do that from the air so as not to disturb the animals, but who knows?

I think something is wrong with that fawn. Maybe even CWD. I will have the Biologist watch that. To bad you couldn't get to those guys chasing deer. But you shouldn't be out there hiking around either after Jan. 1. The winter range is closed to all traffic, including foot traffic. That is why there is no shed hunting until May 1.

Really?

Shed poachers. Just more assholes to deal with as far as big game are concerned. I hope you catch those guys. I go no where without my phone, gps and a digital camera. Any dickweed that messes up, no matter how small the violation, I make a call. Having the Wardens and other law enforcement numbers helps a ton. mtmuley

Too bad you didn't take video of the snowmobilers & post it, somebody may have been able to recognize them. At the very least you may have been able to turn it in to fish & game so they could maybe monitor the area to see if it happens again, and then bust these guys. Its just stupidity what people do to get their kicks I hope karma comes to them!!!

I don't know what winter range you visit, but the location I am talking about is not closed at all.

Its open to be driven in a vehicle, its open to be walked, its open to be out on a horse ride, if your horse is so inclined.

The entire area is closed year round to ATV and OHV traffic regardless of winter or summer.
Yes, shed antler hunting in Wyoming is closed until May, but only west of the continental divide.
At this point, the deer are still packing their antlers, I don't think anyone is out looking yet.

Some feel that being out on the winter range at all is an issue. But its not illegal.
Many of us love to spend time watching wildlife during the winter.

You better check the regs on foot traffic though.
Wyoming has several ares that are closed to motorized vehicle traffic Jan 1 - May 1. As far as I know, those areas are not closed to walk in access.

Either way, this is not in one of those areas.

If you go back, I expect you will find that several of those deer didn't make another 24 hours. A hard run, during this time of the year... We've had some cold temps this winter. No latitude to waste resources in an animal out there.

That is bs I hate seein stuff like that and elkass needs to get a life I gurantee it wasn't somebody from Utah your dumb Azz lives in Utah there is dumb people everywhere quit giving Utah guys a bad name

Elkantlers,
I was looking through the scope trying to see some identification numbers, or something that would identify them.
I cant film through the scope, and look through it at the same time.
I wish I could.
In hindsight, I wish I had. I would definitely have posted the video of these folks.
It seems that their faces may be the only way to identify them.

We have done this before. We filmed some guys on ATVs last year, riding through the sage, looking for sheds, in the same area.
My buddy even posted it here.

The problem is that atv and snowmobiles have no large identifications on them.
They need to be like boats and have large, highly visible numbers on both sides so that when something like this happens, you can get those numbers. Call it in.
Or even better, video it, and the BLM can use the video as evidence to identify and prosecute.

As it is, all we have is a bundled up guy, on a machine.
If I ever see the guy again, I will be sure to get as much video as I can. But, like the atv thing last year, its a hard one to sell.

Best case scenario would have been a video of the guys and finding the license plate of the tow vehicle. That would have been good.
No luck.

I have to agree with Letmgetbig about the doe running in circles. I think she had something wrong with her. she wasn't running around like she was searching for something she was just going in circles.

I killed a buck several years ago when I was in High School on the muzzy hunt here in Utah that was doing something similar, he was walking in a tight circle with his nose pointed straight in the air as high as he could stretch his neck, not really looking at anything, just walking in circles. I missed the first shot and he just stopped walking for a few seconds never taking his nose out of the air. He then just started walking in circles again until I shot him with the second shot. Even after I hit him and knocked him down he got up on his front legs and stuck his nose up in the air until I put a finishing shot in him. One of the strangest things I ever saw.

I never did have him checked out, I don't know what exactly was wrong with him, but he was definitely sick with something, my bet is that doe was too.

Bighorn, too bad you couldn't get the "goods" on those guys, enough for prosecution! Behavior on the winter range like that absolutely needs to stop and those guys won't stop doing what they are doing until it hurts them bad, enough that they won't ever do it again!

I don't think you need to convince any of us that these dudes were bad news. It seems apparent they were chasing deer. A bit prematurely to hope for sheds to fall off the bucks, but I can't think of any other reason. Unless of course they are true sickos, and they were literally trying to run bucks to death in order to take the whole animal or worse, to just get a deadhead.

A camera is probably your best friend out there. Document what you can, and stay safe. Confrontation would not be advised. Keep doing what you love and help when you can. That is as much as any of us can do. :)

Wow, you didn't film them??? You were already digiscoping, you should have just filmed them. Those deer will die for sure, the conditions are already pretty harsh this year. All it takes is the energy from one hard run and those deer will bite the dust.

Please report this to the DWR and tell them exactly where you were. If no sheds hit the ground, those guys will be back to try it again. The DWR will be able to follow the tracks to where they parked and maybe even find out more info as far as tire tracks or witnesses that saw the truck parked. PLEASE REPORT THIS!

I'm sure they will be back out there so you might get another chance at video them or get a plate number.
They think no-one will catch them.

My first question is if you were filming from across the draw , why didn't you film the guys chase/harassing the deer? You could have used your equipment to help fight this type of ignorant activity...The law enforcement could have taken it to look further , as well you could have posted it on all these western hunting sites.People get to talking and enough guys upset at this type of crap and will work to catch these guys...
