A couple weeks ago I found this deadhead below. I was back up there yesterday and it was gone. It got the wife and I thinking about whether it was called in or if someone just took it.
What do you think? Are people calling them in before taking them or just grabbing and going? Whatcha' think?

The wife wanted this one, but we couldn't get in-touch with a game officer. It was Saturday. We left it. It's gone now though.

I saw a few winter kills in this area, but not a huge number. Probably more than normal though.
Hard to say what got this buck. Maybe he came into winter with a wound or something. I don't know. ???

Probably a mixed bag. I think many still call it in. There have been too many cases of COs in Utah not giving the head back even when it was shown to not be poached, I think people lost trust. The rule should be a "shall return" instead of a "may return" if they want people to cooperate.

That is a really cool buck. Too bad you tried to do it right and didn't get to keep it. But I guess it's always better to do it the right way than get busted doing otherwise.

Well!

I Can GUARANTEE You it Depends on the Size & Condition of the Rack whether you're gonna get it back or not!

If it's a PISSCUTTER you'll probably be the new owner!

Are you guys in Utah not allowed to just pick up dead heads? Sorry I am just too lazy to read up on it, I am used to picking anything that is naturally killed.

In Utah it's not allowed. You have to call it in to the DWR and then wait until a Conservation Officer (CO) physically checks it out, because it may not have died "naturally".

In addition, if you go shed hunting, there's a season for that and you're required to pass a special online course and carry a certificate of completion.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-27-16 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]I called one in and through the legal process the dwr gave me the antlers this year.

I found this guy last month.
Talked to the DWR, someone else reported it the day before.
Went back a few days later, it was gone.

I reported a bull last month, the DWR came out and got it and after some back and forth I was told last week I get to keep the horns.

The stupid part is that its not the officer that goes out into the field and does the investigation that gets to make the call as to weather or not you get to keep it. Its someone at the office. The officer told me he would recommend I get the horns but said it really wasn't up to him. I took a few extra phone calls to get them to give them to me.

I don't know why they don't let the officer make the judgment call on the spot.

In my case the bull clearly died of natural caused cause he was still alive when I found him, but was all but dead. He was dead a few hours later when I came back to check on him. the officer made it out later that night to process the animal.

I'm guessing most dead heads are picked up. Frankly, unless you have a GPS, how are you supposed to even report where a dead head is..?? Considering the odds, most dead-heads are not trophy animals, so most guys wouldn't think twice about picking up a small head.

I'm guessing any big dead heads would be too much of a temptation for most guys. And as has been shared above, the law-abiding get screwed for it.

I bet people just take them.... like stated above. Most don't trust the CO's
--I saw a guy with a backpack full of elk sheds this weekend with signs everywhere stating nobody can be in the area at all till 2nd Saturday in April.....He was walking right down the road.....not a care at all

>What did they say when you
>called him in? Were they
>able to ticket him?

They said they would "check it out"....

I found this dead head last year during the muzzy dear hunt, I called it in and took the officer to the site. He let me watch the investigation and determined the cause of death to be natural and allowed me to keep the antlers. We went back to his truck and he printed out a certificate of possession.

The officers I dealt with told me that it really wasn't there call. That they could suggest I be able to keep the antlers but that it was someone at the office that made the final judgment call.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-01-16 AT 06:21AM (MST)[p]Maybe the officer that investigated mine was little higher up the food chain?

I found a elk dead head a few years back and tryed to do the right thing and called it in... I gave the CO the gps cordanates. After he failed to find the carcass he called me and I gave him some detailed directions (HE HAD THE GPS CORDANATES!). After a second attempt to locate the animal he called back and said that he was close and could smell it but not locate it. So, I drove 2 hours to meet him and take him to it. He then performed his investigation and determined that there was no foul play.... After all that he did not award me the head... It's a shame to say but I will not call anymore dead heads in!!

Well I finally got my elk head back, it took a little longer than I would have liked but I am happy other than the fact that they skull capped it so I cant do a European mount with it now.

I found this bull still alive but just barely he couldn't stand and really wouldn't even open his eyes, and would just rock his head from side to side. I called the DWR to see if they could send someone out to put him down, or get permission to do it myself but they wouldn't let me and an officer wasn't going to be able to make it until later that evening. I had to leave him their to die a slow death.

I came back several hours later to check on him and he was dead. The officer didn't make it out to him until well after dark.

Here is a couple more photos, the officer figured he was just a super old bull that got to old to eat as his teeth were really worn down.

That's a cool spike only candidate Jake. I've killed/seen some pretty squirrelly horned Bulls out your way. Must be some strange water somewhere out there?
