would you?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-16 AT 04:58PM (MST)[p]If you were guaranteed one tag on the henries or a similar unit with weapon of your choice would you willingly give up mule deer hunting for the rest of your life in all states for it?

edit: crap I meant to put this in MD forum...

Excellent question.

Yes. For two reasons.
1. I'm 67 and one great tag would satisfy me now.
2. I'm more than happy to hunt Blacktails. Just as challenging as mule deer without the elevation or expense and they're easier to pack out. :)

Anyone (who hunts mule deer regularly) who answers "yes" to this question (aside from being at the end of their hunting career) is in it for all the wrong reasons!

Not a chance for me!

Assuming I have 35-40 years of hunting left in my life, not only no, but (BLEEP) no!

You never know what life brings, but there are way too many good memories to be made over a lifetime to give it all up, even if it is for a shot at a once in a lifetime type buck.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-16-16 AT 06:45AM (MST)[p]I hunt for meat, challenge, and love for the hunt. Dumb question for me.

I would only do that if I knew I wasn't going to be able to walk the following year. My dad is 71 and still gets on it with me. We haven't hunted anywhere that was too tough for him to get up and down the mountains. It may take a tad longer with more rests, but he still does it. One tag in return for the rest of your mule deer hunting days? No way.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

Not a dumb question. But I would not take the tag. If for some reason I got lucky and drew the tag, ide turn it in if giving up mule deer hunting was the "catch".

I agree, I wouldn't either, However I am surprised there isn't some that would say yes that wasn't near the end of their hunting time..

YELUM, I guess it's just me and you. I'll pick you up and do all the driving, camp set up, cooking etc. if you'll do all the spotting and antler judging. We'd make a good team! :)

Yep! Since the first number of my age starts with a 7 I'd love to hunt the Henries just once. I have a bunch of deer points in AZ,WY,NV, and some in CO that I will probably never use. Cashed in my deer points in CA and my WY elk points last year.
Now elk is a another story. I'll still be chasing then if my grandkids have to push a wheelchair up the mountain.

No way in he!! It's not about the size of the buck it's about the memories u make trying for the harvest plus I got 2 little boys I gotta pass it on to

No.

There are too many memories yet to be made on general deer hunts.

I'm one of the lucky ones who hunted that hill for many years when it was a general hunt. I suspect it was a bit tougher to find a great buck but it was a rewarding general unit when we did score on something special.

Some look upon the unit, in it's current incarnation, as a success. I look at it as a huge management blunder and have voice my opinion on the subject before.

PS: I know you were not specifically speaking about the Henry's.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-16 AT 03:12PM (MST)[p]I'm going to take a different view than most it seems. I would say "yes".

Someone above said anyone that would say "yes" is in it for all the wrong reasons. I have to disagree. Completely disagree.

I know for a fact that if I had a Henry's deer tag in my pocket, that I would have along with me all of the most important people in my life to share in the experience of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We would all share in the enjoyment of hunting a storied unit, and with some hard work and luck, maybe kill a 240" deer... Though a 'dinky' 200 incher would more than do. :)

After that, I'd be in stored for 20-30 years of supporting those same family members with their respective deer hunting endeavors. In about 10 years, by children would begin hunting as well, and I'd be taking them each and every year. The only part of hunting I'd be missing out on would be pulling the trigger on my own deer.

When I look at it, taking the Henry's tag would mean I am in it for all the RIGHT reasons. I would be trading my own deer hunting for the rest of my life in order to focus more on those around me and their opportunities. And the GRAVY ON TOP would be if I killed a buck of a lifetime.

completely understand BR, I know this is going to sound wrong cause some things you just can't put into typing...
We are all hunters and pulling the trigger is part of the reason we are out there though.
I enjoy helping others too, however I know I would miss pulling the trigger if I made the deal. I'd rather pull the trigger 30 times vs 1 time.

Yes, I would. Happily.

No need for lengthy explanations, but sometimes people need to remember..... everybody's situation is different, and what may be right (or wrong) for one guy may not be for the next guy.

Huh? I didn't know there was a wrong reason if done in the context of fair chase and within the law. I believe there's room for all of us and thank GOD we're not all the exact same.

Thousands and thousands of guys are just itching for the chance to draw LE tags so they can be trophy hunters. Are they all wrong for wanting a great trophy-potential hunt? I think not.

Zeke

I agree Zeke, not like the guys are leaving the meat in the field, so is it really trophy hunting then? Just because a hunter has different standards than someone else on what a "trophy" is doesn't make them bad.

I really don't like it when people say trophy hunting. That has so many meanings, heck my meaning changes from hunt to hunt!
A trophy could be a dang spike or a doe for a 12 year old kids first hunt!

"Hunting is where you prove yourself"

Yep!
Every animal I hunt is a trophy (even if it's not a wall-hanger) so each time in the field is a trophy hunt... even for doves, spike elk or a 2 pt deer. This has to be true since I could darn sure buy meat way cheaper than I can hunt for meat.

Years ago, upon returning from a dall sheep hunt, a guy asked why I was getting all excited about the dove hunt. I told him that doves were trophies to me and I love to hunt anything whenever possible, legal, ethical. Simple to me!

Yet you are on a forum named MONSTER Muleys, not DoeMuleys, or RaghornMuleys, or DinkMuleys.

Hmmmm.....

You missed the whole point, but I don't feel like explaining it. A doe is not a trophy to a real trophy hunter.

We're all entitled to our opinion. Even me.

I sort of see your point.
The TRUE trophy hunter never looks down on anyone who wants to shoot a doe.....whatever a trophy hunter is. The true trophy Hunter will shoot a doe (when appropriate) because they like the meat or has someone who wants it....according to me.

Sorry you didn't feel like explaining your position. Having an opinion isn't a bad thing at all, failing to make your point is but it's a free country and this is the WWW.

Interesting question mtman, and the responses have been equally engaging.
If I were a betting man, I would guess many (probably most) who responded NO, to your question will never get a chance to hunt a serious "trophy unit", like the Henrys. There are simply too few tags and too many of us who want one. So going for broke on one tag could be pretty alluring to anyone who sets his sights on at least one monster buck in their lifetime.

I used to hate not getting a deer every year, but over time, that yearning/obsession has left me. As Zeke has pointed out, its not a good thing or a bad thing. It is just me. Now I actually prefer helping others kill a deer, rather than pulling the trigger for myself. I have also already taken my "dream buck" so if I never kill another buck, I would be OK. So count me as a YES vote, since another "dream buck" would be very sweet frosting on my Muley Cake.

There are also plenty of other critters to chase that could fill my Muley void. I just got back from four days of chasing turkeys. There's lots of other "fun time" opportunities out there.

I understand, there are a lot of species to chase, heck 4 other deer alone. If I was up in my years and chasing muleys seemed to be coming to an end, I would definitely take the one tag. My Dad is 68 and he would exchange that one tag for mule deer and elk! Every one is different, I thought there might be a few more "young" guys that would do it though.
