NM 2b January archery

Hunted it twice helping a friend on the November rifle hunt and it's tough and not nearly the unit it used to be. If you do some googling on websites, your January hunt is really a tough weather hunt out where it's hard to get an animal with archery equipment due to the elements.

LAST EDITED ON May-02-16 AT 04:05PM (MST)[p]Elkhunter96, look up Rory Truby in Farmington NM, he is a deputy Sheriff in that area. If you need a couple more names let me know. You are going to have a great hunt. One thing is you'll need to be accurate for long shots. A resident friend of mine, Gary hunted it with his cousin they both took monster bucks but he said his shot was 80 yards because the snow was so deep, they couldn't get close enough.

I'm sending Gary's number to your PM. I have two numbers can't remember which is current

Good luck and let me know how you do

I hunted it last year. It is a bit frustrating finding the bigger bucks, but they are there. Most of the country looks the same, so its just a matter of a lot of glassing to locate them. After a few days we had some great bucks to hunt. The roads are crap! Bring chains and be prepared for really cold weather. We had probably 18 inches of snow on the level. Really fun hunt. I applied again and did not get drawn.

I drew this hunt and was excited about it until I started to read all the forum posts. Is this hunt really just a bitter cold hunt for mediocre deer? Or is all the doom and gloom overstated? I'm going on the hunt either way so if anyone who has been on the hunt has anything helpful to share with me I would appreciate it.

Its a good hunt but big deer are super hard to find! Snow helps and kills the hunt. Don't waste time scouting early in the year but do get up and learn the road a little since all the gates will be locked up in December. The fact that you will see NO deer in summer is NOT a issue the deer are all up on wolf creek pass

That was my experience, but I admit I did not give it a Hero try. After 3-4 days of bitter cold I said screw it and went home, better things to do in January. A lot of people are surprised how freaking cold that area can get, the first morning of the hunt my truck thermometer read -17 F. A few mornings later it was only -2 F. I did find one decent buck (guess about 170) but never got closer than ~100 yards. Crunchy snow made stalking nearly impossible, at least for me. I latter wondered if bear paws (or something similar) would work on crunchy snow. I did talk to one patient hunter who told me he had some success patterning specific bucks, then ambushing them, but it takes time. You will also see a lot guys roadhunting, yes I'm talking about bowhunters.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Where do most people stay? In a local motel??

I expect it to be very cold, appreciate the tips on longer shots. I will be ready

Teryn, those are some great bucks totally awesome!
