Drew a muzzleloader Vernon deer tag this year. Anyone know the area well or have any information they would share. Would appreciate any information you could provide (past hunting success, where to start, etc.) Thanks

Hunting the cedars for deer is tough. I remember when I was a boy hunting the look out pass area with my father. He would hike up the hill and glass. One morning it was cold and dad built us boys a fire to stay warm but we were still cold. Dad asked if we wanted to go back to camp or if we cared if he shot a doe (legal in those days). All dad could see was legs. When we walked up on the deer we were all amazed, it was a very large 3 point buck. That deer never moved a muscle the whole time we sat there.

Congrats on the Tag Jimmer! you will have a blast on that unit! It does hold a few monster bucks as well!!

Congrats to you guys who drew Vernon tags. Get up high and watch the parade of road hunters glass a canyon for 2 minutes then drive to the next canyon...repeat.

Congrats to jimmer, huntFX4, and Zacko1! I also drew a Vernon rifle tag this year. Maybe I'll see y'all out there!

Should be a fun hunt for you guys. Last year I saw mature bucks following does and sniffing the air alot earlier than I have witnessed in other areas. I believe this is the year to have a rifle tag out there because of the late hunt dates. Good Luck!

Congrats to all those who have drawn their tags. I hope you find the one you want. And thank you to all who have helped us. Hope to be posting photos and info soon. Time to sight in that new scope, first things first. I am sure all are as excited as I to hunt some desert muleys.

Hey guys congrats I too was lucky enough to draw the Multi-season tag for Vernon and am excited to get out and find some shooters.

Congrats on the tags guys. I had the archery tag in 2011, which is a long time ago now I suppose, but it seems like it was just last year.

Very fun unit to hunt. Lots of deer, lots of bucks. Enjoy it and good luck!

How did you do on your archery hunt? I was out there on an antelope hunt in 2011. Saw some archery hunters along Erickson pass. Saw tons of antelope but no deer.

Several of you posted claiming to have tags. I'm curious how many points you each had.
Congrats on the tags and good luck.
Wish I had info to share with you.

10 points going in. Not counting the years I put in before the point system. My nephew has drawn a limited entry deer tag twice and he is 30 years old, 1St time with 0 points 2nd time with 2 points. This is my first le deer tag and I am in my 50's.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-09-16 AT 01:04PM (MST)[p]I also drew the same tag. I have been seeing some really nice bucks. I also have a few questions. I have been wanting to go check out keg mtn wondering how the deer are out there. Also if anyone has hinted this unit in the past have you ran into any rattlers out there? I have seen a few so far. Oh and to answer a question above I had 12 points

Lots of rattle snakes out that way. If you leave them alone they will do the same. Only had one try to get me.

The fight with my old reliable muzzleloader is finally over. Got it sighted in today. Sigh of relief. Now I can concentrate on the scouting. Will try to get some trail cam photos posted soon. Hope all are having fun scouting and planning their hunts. Thank you all for the hints/information. I will keep you posted.

Just got home from some morning scouting. Not much water this year. Saw plenty of deer but nothing real big. Saw a nice mid to upper 20's 3x4 heavy. That is the only buck I saw that would give me an itchy trigger finger. Simpson range is really dry, no deer sign. Didn't make it out to Keg mtn..

Hunted Vernon muzzy back when it was in Nov,The deer were migrating out to Keg for the winter, I dont think there's much water out there .There are a couple springs out there I believe.

Keg mtn. has 6 Springs that I know of. I have never hunted deer out there but spent alot of time hunting rabbits, coyote, doves and Chuckar. I have seen very few deer over the years but I did see some big ones in the middle of summer one year. They weren't anywhere near a water source that I know of. There was a 2 point buck over 30 wide with a lot of mass. About a dozen bucks all together, most nontypical. Like I said that was many years ago.

Don't get too excited about "20's 3x4 heavy". You can do a lot better on the Vernon. Especially on the Muzzy. Be patient

More scouting over the weekend. Didn't see a lot of deer but I did see a couple of nice bucks. One with velvet gone and the other was a giant from side view but when he looked my direction he was narrow, about 23 wide. Never seen a buck that had so much that was so narrow. Having fun so far.

I drew an expo tag. I have been out but not seeing any shooters? Does anyone have a general area for finding a decent buck? I have been hanging out on the north end of the Unit. Is there a different area I should really check out? Any help would be awesome. If I find a few shooters I'll pass the information along. Maybe we can all meet up on the hill for some backstraps.

Best of luck next week! I have the rifle tag! let me know if you see any that I could go after. I am excited to go find a big boy. If you need any help let me know. I love being out there.

The muzzleloader hunt was tough. I would not point up on this unit if I were to do it again. Didn't see many bucks and it took several days to find some. I did see the needle in the hay stack buck and even had him in my cross hairs. I hope all who drew the tag are successful and for those who haven't been out, hunt hard and cover some ground. Pay more than the usual attention to the sage covered hills, that sage is tall. I did not bring home a buck but the hunt isn't over.

Jimmer good luck on the rest of your hunt... I'd like to here more about your "needle in a haystack" buck? I don't need any details of where he was, I'd just like to hear about his size... Again good luck on the rest of the hunt...

My buddy Drew an expo tag out there a few years ago, we scouted it and hunted it hard. We seen a ton of bucks just not quality bucks. The average bucks we would see were 140s-150s. Biggest buck we seen that we got on was a mid 160s buck. I would suggest checking out Dutch, Joes, Indian Hollow.
