Hey guys, I got lucky and will be hunting the LE Oak Creek deer unit this year. I seen some great bucks at the hunting expo and on here so decided it was worth a chance to switch. I will be hiring a guide so honey holes and locations aren't what I'm after. All I'm looking for is advice from people who have been there and done that, preferably with pictures of your deer. Would you hire a guide if you could do it again? Or if you did who did you hire, how was your experience with that guide? What kind of conditions should I expect? Everything I have heard is that it's steep and that I need to be in shape, thanks to crossfit that isn't a problem, and bring extra boots. What is the range I will get shots at? All questions that I have asked outfitters already but It's always nice to talk to people with experience.

Congrats!!
If your considering a guide i would go with either Wade Lemon or (Neil Clayton) who i believe is working for David Viroskco of North Rim Outfitters. Both know the unit very well because they live on it.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-16 AT 02:22PM (MST)[p]Be in good shape and hire a guide. Guys who draw this tag and don't know the unit will likely be disappointed. These are big rugged mountains with lots of rocks and ledges. The bigger bucks seem to be in the roughest country.Deer densities are low but seem to be improving. Some great bucks will be taken in the unit, most of which will be taken by locals and guides. Good luck.

Very difficult hunt. You will put some steep miles on your feet. The multiple boot tip was good. Most people will can do one day without much wear and tear. Multiple days will beat you physically and mentally if you aren't ready.

I did not have a guide, did it all with my brother, sister, and good friend and had a blast. Up to the night before the opener I hadn't put a single buck on the hit list. They were there, I knew from past experience they were there, but I had a hard time finding them.

We found my buck of a lifetime opening morning, I didn't think twice.

I have spent a lot of time on the unit. If you are happy with a 180 buck you can do it on your own probably. If you are going for bigger you may want to consider a guide. Not an easy hunt but you can get a solid buck if you are willing to put the time in scouting.
