Advice on Hunting the Pines in AZ

I grew up hunting Muleys in wide open country. Spot and stalk, long range shooting, etc. I need some advice on how to hunt Muleys in the trees; dense Ponderosa forest. I have lots of elk hunting experience in trees but I don't generally see muley bucks during those hunts (pockets of does yes but no bucks).

Turns out two of my kids got drawn for Jr Deer Hunts in U23 at the same time their older brother will be in U3C for Jr Elk. The units are right next to each other so we can all stay at the same camp. I will be taking the younger two out for deer up in the pines close to U3C while the older boy does his elk hunt not far from camp.

Do you hunt trails or sit in saddles or edges of clearings? Do you walk ravines, tops of ridges or hillsides?
Do you try to drive them?
How do you find them?
In the open country of AZ, we can easily hike for 5+ miles per day looking for deer. How far should I plan on hiking in the trees?
Are most shots quick from standing position? <daughter has CP and has to use shooting sticks to compensate for weak left side, for her jr elk hunt we had time to get set up on sticks>

I am guessing there is no way I can take my eyes off either of he kids as they would surely get lost in the woods.
Will my FRS radios work in the trees? <they'll have cell phones with GPS and maps downloaded but no reception to call>

Any other suggestions on either safety, challenges, or techniques?
