North Slope limited entry

Hello - I drew a limited entry buck tag for the North Slope at the Western Hunting Expo. I don't have a lot of knowledge of this area. This hunt takes place during the general season elk hunt. Some friends at work suggested a couple of areas to scout. Does anyone know somebody that has private property that would be willing to sell a trespass permit? Any suggestions for an area to try would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Hey jcwager- congratulations on drawing an Expo tag. Some truth about the hunt you drew: It is a general season unit for archery, muzzleloader, and regular rifle. The DWR decided to add this "Limited Entry" hunt between the Muzzleloader hunt and Regular Rifle hunt in order to hopefully catch more of the migrating deer before they make it across the border into Wyoming.

If you look at the Draw Odds report for this unit, you will see that everyone who put in for it, drew it. Even with "0" points. It is not a trophy unit.

With that said, most of that area is heavily timbered which usually means fewer encounters with deer. You can choose to hunt "high", but the impression is that deer in that area begin to migrate down to the WY border by then. The area is huge, but if you have friends that have given you some areas to check out, I would take their guidance. There are nice bucks in that area, but I would recommend that if you see a 4-point, you take it because of the reduced encounters with deer. I'd shoot a 3-point too probably. Let the 2-points live. :)

I would hunt over by whitney res. I know of some good bucks killed in the past. More stalk than spot.
A few good bucks over by hoop lake also....or even the phil pico...manilla area....check ro be sure these areas are included.

Thanks for the info! I have been getting this same information that this tag is not much of an opportunity for a trophy. I picked up an elk tag just in case I come across a shot. I will follow your recommendation.
