Wyoming G and H units

I see a few rubbed on September 1st each year. I've seen other bucks in full velvet on September 20 but very few.

depends on how old the bucks are.....the older they get the lazier they are.....
I've shot a lot of old bucks that still have some velvet on them in first week of Oct.

The buck I killed in G last year had just shed velvet right before the opener. His horns were white and a little pink in some areas. He hadnt quite polished them off. He as a 5.5 year old buck, 4x5 at 31 inches wide. Scored 180. Although the check stationed guessed him at 9-10 years old with the lack of teeth. But who knows.

Are you asking because you want to know if you need to bring something for velvet preservation for the rifle opener? I have had the same exact question before.

If so, I think you should look at the odds of a buck being in velvet on the 15th. I think the odds are low, probably around 5-10% that a mature buck will be in velvet in G or H on the 15th. Many do shed right before the opener, so if you are there archery hunting the odds go way up that you would shoot one in velvet.

Most of them are hard horned by the rifle opener, but there area exceptions. I shot the buck below, on September 15. I saw several that day in velvet. I've no idea why many of them rubbed a little later. The velvet on this one was loose and I'm sure he would have had it off soon.
