2016 Muzzy Deer Success

Wanted to share a few pictures from my muzzy deer hunt this past week. This year, instead of the usual suspects that I typically hunt with it was just myself, my son and my nephew, both along for their first deer hunt. We left home Wednesday afternoon and made it to camp around 5:30, just in time to hunt for the evening. We saw several small 2 points, but elected to pass since it was the first night of the hunt and we were prepared to stay through Sunday. Thursday was more of the same, we saw several does and fawns and small two points all day but decided to let them walk! Friday morning we awoke to fog, lots of thick fog, it made for some great fall pictures but was not good for spotting and hunting deer! However, as soon as the sun was up the fog burned off and we enjoyed nothing but bright sunny blue skies for the rest of the day. by mid morning, we hadn't seen much, other than a few does and fawns (even the two points seemed scarce...) so we headed a little further south to a different location. After hiking around and seeing more does/fawns and spikes we were on our way back headed in the truck when I thought it would be a good idea to push one more stand of trees before getting back to the truck. As we were hiking we jumped two big bull elk, man they were big, and pretty! How those big suckers seem to move around so easily in that thick stuff though is a real mystery! Anyway, we followed them for a little bit until they'd had enough and disappeared. The boys sure thought those elk were cool! No sooner had we lost the elk then three deer came bounding through the trees just ahead of us about 120 yards away. A small 2 point, a small 3 point, and a larger 2 point. I told the boys to get ready as I was going to shoot the bigger 2 point. So I got down on my knee settled the cross hairs on the bigger buck and pulled the trigger. For the first time in my life I experienced a hang fire...Instead of a bang, I heard the snap of the trigger and then about 1 second later my gun fired. It spooked me, but not the deer. They hopped forward about 4-5 steps and then stopped, I quickly reloaded but was so thrown/rattled by the hang fire that I missed the second shot. This time I expected the bucks to flee the country for good, however, they didn't move. This gave me time to reload and take a 3rd shot! This time I hit where I was aiming, and the buck kicked and ran. Afterwards, it took a few minutes of looking but we finally found the blood trail which led us right to the buck piled up about 150 yards away from where I shot him. Turns out I hit him through both lungs! The boys were ecstatic and super excited as you can tell from the photo. Anyway, he's not the biggest buck on the mountain, but I guess it was meant to be since he stood there for 3 shots! I wouldn't trade the experience of this hunt for anything. It was so much fun having both boys along to share in the excitement, challenges and success of the hunt. They were both troopers afterwards, doing their best to help me clean and drag the deer back to the truck! Memories that both myself and they (I hope) will never forget!

Super pictures!!! Thanks for taking those young men hunting. Those memories will last forever. Congrats!

I'm hoping to do the same in a few weeks with my son. Congratulations on a successful hunt. I'd argue that the hunt would have been a great success even without the filled tag.
Thanks for sharing.

Outstanding the SIZE of the memories with your kids are the most important ones. You guys had a great hunt.

Nice job, getting it done! It is always a sweeter deal with the kids around to experience the moment. I can't wait to take my oldest daughter out next year on her first hunt with me.
