Vernon Muzzy Success

LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-16 AT 06:30PM (MST)[p]How did it go for you jimmer? See any worth going after?

I hunted hard for 7 days and only had one buck in my cross hairs. It was a really nice buck. Unfortunately I was not able to bring him home. I believe another hunter claimed him. It's a tough hunt. Never saw any good bucks other than the one. I seen plenty scouting but on the hunt they were scarce.

They do seem to be a bit more scarce this year. Saw one good buck today scouting. Hope they don't start migrating before the rifle opener.

Seems to me to be the case. After the big storm in early September they seemed to vanish. I saw 1 shooter and put a bullet in him. I hate to say it but watch out for unethical hunters. All I have is a salty tag to chew on.

I do have that concern with those types of guys. I'm hoping high will leave me dry of most of the tag holders. But so far, i've not seen anything i will put the hammer down on up high. I've seen the unethical while duck hunting the past two years with people seeing me with decoys out and ducks circling, they set up close and shoot at the circling birds.

how was your hit on that buck?

He dropped like he was hit in the head. He got up and drug his hind legs then started walkin off. The bullet did not pass through and it entered on the right side far back and broke ribs under the left shoulder. It was a good hit. The guts plugged the hole on the right side and the left side clotted up so he left little blood.

.....and? Did he walk over the hill and get shot? Did someone find him dead the next morning and tag him? I am missing the unethical hunter portion.

Not sure why you would bring it up in the first place if you didn't want to tell the story, but you are right, what's done is done.

Me too! Here's one to look at. It's not dead but it will have to do.

I have the rifle tag in Vernon this year, and was wondering if you had any suggestions on where to find some good bucks. They all seemed low the past few weeks, but do you have a suggestion on specific areas to look at? Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry I don't have specifics. I found a nice group of bucks but towards the end of the hunt they moved out. I will PM you with the information. It was tough on the muzzy hunt to find bucks.
Try to find the transition zones or pockets where they are living before fully migrating.

I would like to retract what I said about unethical hunters. I take responsibility for what happened. I allowed the buck to be bumped even though it was against my better judgment. I may be the unethical hunter in this.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post on here. I was fortunate enough to tag this buck in the last couple days of the Muzzy hunt. I first found him during the archery hunt. The first time I found him I was too far way and it was too late to go after him. The next time found him he was with 12 smaller bucks and at least 10 does. I got with in 150 yards and bumped them over the ridge. I spent the first part of the Muzzy hunt trying to find him again with no luck. I figured he had to be in the same place I had found him before so I keep looking in that same area. I found him toward the end of the hunt one morning, hurried to get in closer. By the time I hiked up the ridge he was gone again. I found him in a little clearing between aspens but I was still too far away so I got to a ridge that was closer. By the time I got there he had gone into the trees. I set up waiting for him to come back out. 7 hours later he poked his head out and I was able to get a shot off and drop him. He was the biggest buck I ever saw out there. I am curious to see what other bucks have been taken so far this year of this unit.

Nice buck! Congrats! Thanks for the story.
I hope to see more success photos/stories from the other muzzy hunters.
