Muzzleloader deer odyssey

LAST EDITED ON Oct-12-16 AT 12:13PM (MST)[p]I drew the muzzleloader Paunsaugunt deer tag and had a wonderful time in the field with my brother and 2 sons-in-law.

Between scouting and hunting I spent 16 days on the unit and had a wonderful time albeit a much tougher hunt than I ever imagined it would be. Scouting was fun but near worthless, in my case, since the deer began their famous migration and were in a totally different areas than I had previously ventured. I hunted 4 completely different areas and felt like we were finally in the bucks on day 6 of the hunt.

I killed my buck on the night of the 7th day at "Ultimate Muzzleloader" range with a single well placed Parker Bullet. Some of you have followed my load development and near countless trips to the range in preparation for this grand adventure. I don't like leaving the shot to chance since there's so much about hunting that is luck-based (whether we'll admit it or not).

The morning before I killed my buck I saw over 100 4x4 bucks but nothing that turned my crank. When I saw my buck that night I got as excited as ever and knew I wanted to try for him.

I watch my buck and 25 other bucks in the group feed slowly my way but the sun was now long gone and the light fading fast. As the deer fed closer I kept tabs on the range, I eventually made the decision that it was now or never since the deer were migrating hard every night and my hunt was drawing to a close.

I was sitting with my back against a pinion trunk and decided to use the shooting sticks so I wouldn't skip a bullet off the brush (let me say that I usually hate sticks but they worked well for me this time and I'm glad I'd packed then in with me). As my brother scoped down from a distant ridge on the whole scene with 16X his spotting scope, I prepared for the shot.

One shot and the deer lurched forward and was down in under 2 seconds! The awesome buck was mine and "score be damned" as my brother later said. I quickly loaded the rifle and made the long walk in the near darkness to my buck. My brother came off his perch and we met at the deer at almost the exact moment.

The closer I got the more pleased I was. 7 score-able points per side and just a whisker short of the magic 30' wide mark. I was pleased!

After caping, quartering and the long pack-out to the road in the darkness, we found the quads and made the 8 mile trip to camp where we ate dinner at 1 am and flopped into bed.

Yes, it had been quite an odyssey!

Thanks for looking,
Zeke

That's real life and number is probably a little conservative! I'm 63 years old and have been hunting hard for all these years and NEVER seen anything like it except for a caribou migration. It's just one of the glorious aspects of the hunt.

I also want to thank the many guys who selflessly offered valuable information which proved so crucial on this hunt!

DIY is a myth and I'll take all the help I can get!

Thank YOU!

Happy for you Zeke, that is a great buck! Plus all the memories you have from it too!
Congrats :D

Congrats, that's one awesome buck. You'd be foolish to pass on that, looking for better! I had hoped for the muzzy tag this year, but didn't pan out. With 21 points for next year I will have my fingers crossed again. I may have to bend your ear a little if I draw. :)

The shot was exactly as far as it needed to be for the crosshair hold. Otherwise I would have missed, right?!?!

Let's just say the shot was within MY range and the limits of my "magic" rifle.

Yes, we road quads far and wide but only when we ran out of road and needed to blaze new mud-rutted trails right up the bottom of pristine riparian areas!!! Bess can't possibly expect me to walk at all, can he? TIC

Congrats Zeke! That is an awesome buck and it sounds like you had a great hunt. The Pausaugunt is one of my favorite units. It is a beautiful and frustrating but a blast to hunt. Thanks for posting.

Outstanding! Sounds like you had a great hunt and that is a buck of a lifetime for most all of us, myself included. That daylight pic really does show the mass better. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on a great "odyssey".
You always make the most out of your opportunities!
That is an outstanding report, and an outstanding buck.
Well done!

Add me to the list of your conratulators. Scote be damned, that's still a helluva buck! I can hear the appreciation of your hunt and animal in your writing. Congrats again.

Hi Zeke,

My mind is being blown right now on the 100 plus 4x4's seen in one morning. Doing research on the unit it shows to be an amazing one. Is it true there was only 4 tags given out for the multi season tag this year?

Wow, Awesome frame on that Buck. How would it be, if we could see that many bucks on all units throughout the state. It would be like the old days stories my Dad and Grandfather talk about. Congrats on a very unique Buck. One of the coolest Bucks ive seen down. Thanks for posting.

Congrats on a great buck. I know I could never pass on great unique buck like that. Sounds like you made the most if your hunt.

Awesome buck and story there my friend. You did well Zeke. You have some great memories there. Love the mass of that buck. I'll stop by the office and chat about your hunt, buck and rifle. CONGRATS!!!

Zeke,
Congrats on a great buck with a lot of WOW factor.
Got to love it when all of the work and preparation come together just right. :D

Congratulations Zeke. (we say that a lot around here) :) Truly amazing hunt as usual. I love that buck!

Waaaay better than a new girlfriend, IMO! :D

Dang Zeke,
Your MM Rock Star status is shining!
I've never seen so many responses in one afternoon and here I thought I was your only friend. I must be sorely mistaken.
Anyway, congrats again Mr. Zeke on a fine trophy and an even finer adventure.

You sure have this huntin' deal figured out! :)

Look at the bases and mass on that thing!

That is such a unique buck. A major congrats to you an a true trophy. Good work, Zeke.

That migration is something to behold, for sure.

Cool buck, Zeke! I'm sure it was quite the experience to see that many bucks....

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

That thing is a brute! I dig the extra tines coming from the back, and baseball bat sized bases, they are awesome. Congrats on a job well done!

That's really one of the more unique racks I've seen. A 4X4 with an extra set of forks below. Awesome.

Congrats you old fart. That is awesome. Way to go. I may be heading down there for the rifle hunt to help a family that drew 5 tags. Hope we have as much luck as you did. If not, I may be calling you for some tips!!!

Congrats zeke on an awesome buck!
It was a lot of fun being able to help you.
That place is pretty awesome. Congrats again.

Thank you ALL for the kind comments! It's appreciated that you enjoyed this buck as much as I do.

Now a word about the 100 4X4 bucks in a single morning; This is true and what made it even more mind-blowing for me was the fact that there were a couple sessions (morning or evening) that we didn't see a single deer!!!! Zip, zero, not a hair of deer of any persuasion!

We scrambled to find the area that held deer and our final area was littered with does and small bucks but as the hunt progressed the bucks seemed to magically increase in number and size until finally we found the mother-lode on the morning of the 7th day. Yes, it was even more mind-blowing for me to SEE it than it is for you to hear it!

There were just things about the hunt that will remain in my brain as sweet memories and I've shared a few with you guys.

I still cannot say enough about those souls who helped on this hunt, either in person (CJ, Kurt, Brody) or with valuable information. Thank YOU again!

Zeke

Great story and even better buck. That is a buck of a lifetime! Such a neat buck. I agree score be damned but just out of curiosity what did he score? I don't know if I could have passed that buck. Sometimes score means nothing with deer like that

Zeke,

Congratulations on a neat buck and an incredible hunt! That daylight pic does indeed show the mass much better! Well done! You have almost convinced me to throw my points at that unit:)

Great buck! Congrats on making the most out of the tag. Those unique, big bucks are what keep me up at night.

Congrats on that unique buck Zeke! That daytime picture does him more justice than the nighttime ones for sure. Great buck.

Duke, you are the man! That's a helluva buck....looks like one I saw in my front yard the other day! When I grow up I want to be like you!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-16 AT 00:42AM (MST)[p]Hellava buck there!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-17-16 AT 10:57AM (MST)[p]I had a muzzy tag too for paunsagaunt. I can attest to everything you said. It was a very difficult hunt and my scouting did me absolutely no good either. I am pretty sure I saw your brother on his perch one evening. Anyways I finally got my buck on day seven. He was a symmetrical 5x5 28 in wide. Really cool looking buck. I'm really happy with him. I to used the "ultimate" muzzle loader but my shot was not so magical at 160 yards but help killed over in a couple seconds with a Parker ballistic extreme right through the lungs. Maybe I will create a post with a picture for all to see.

Congratulations, Truehunter, on a tough yet successful hunt!

It sounds like we had a similar experience and both shot bucks of similar size.

It would be fun to converse with you sometime, if you're willing.

Let's PM and share emails and see how close we were to the same area.

Congratulations again!

Good hell Bess, I can pi$$ further and more accurately than any remington ever did. At least 20 years ago I could ;-) now it's more like a sawed off 870. With less jamming of course

Small world! I see that your wife whacked a great buck too. Totally different type buck and I'd love to hear about it.

I sent a PM.

Zeke

Big time congrats Zeke. Glad a good guy got a great buck. I can't believe the symmetry for a buck like that. Truly a great trophy.

Thanks so much for all the kind comments! It was an adventure to be cherished and one that I hope you all can experience, in one form or another, at least one in your lifetime. Again, thanks to those who helped on the hunt.

Good luck to all on the general and LE seasons this weekend. Be safe!

Here's the buck with the skull cleaned off. I usually wait too long but got right on it to avoid the stink.

Zeke,
Awesome buck! Congrats!

So how would you rate the overall muzzy experience down there? How many bucks did you see that most would consider shooters (175-180+ Type Bucks)? I'm just curious because I have been looking at this hunt for quite a while.

Thanks

HJB,
Some days were really tough because we were not in the deer. Some days were glorious because we saw hundreds of deer and lots of "good" bucks but surprisingly few "trophy" bucks. I never saw that "monster muley".

If I had to be pinned down on a quantity spotted of "trophy" bucks, I'd say I saw 3-4 in the 10 days I was there (7 hunting days) and made a play for 3 of them, killing 1 of the 3.

While it's a top quality hunt, we did see plenty of people. There were deer hunters, elk hunters, outfitters and guides, ranchers and lots of folks just out looking at the deer. Be mentally prepared but in reality there's always someplace to go to be by yourself. Every place that we "discovered" was already on the radar of the locals, guides and more informed.

I'd still rate my experience as a 10 since any and every hunt is a roll-with-the-punches proposition and it worked out well for us.

Zeke

Dang zeke, great buck! I always miss these threads as I'm out in it too. Sure I'm not the only one so bump to the top. Congrats again buddy!

Great Paunsaugunt buck Zeke - congrats to you!! That place is one of a kind for sure with the beautiful landscape and of course the deer and big bucks!! I was fortunate to bowhunt the unit back in 2003 off of a dedicated hunter draw tag back when they did that drawing and it is still to this day one of my greatest memories and funnest hunts of all time.

Good times and congrats again!

Zeke, curious as to how many stags/cactus bucks you saw. If you saw 100 4x4 in one morning I'm sure you must have seen a butt load feminine faced looking stags. Thanks

Sorry YBO. I didn't see any "stags" at all but I was only down there about 18 days this year and have little experience with the unit compared to others.
Zeke

What's interesting is that I saw about 10 of them during the rifle season. Including one that had a boomerang dropper that was incredible. It was n a 4 point frame with lots of small points. The other side had some crown points coming out of the 12 to 15" bases with a long spike point in the center that looked like a handle bar off a bike, except that it grew towards the center of the head instead of outwards. Crazy.

Thanks again for the kind comments guys!

YBO,
Not knowing what you were driving at, I got thinking about it deeper. I saw some non-typicals but never a stag buck that I could identify as such.

While I didn't see one and none in my little "posse" saw one, there was a rancher who dropped by my camp the day after I killed my buck and said the guys down at the "fork" had killed a "cactus" buck and went on to describe some knotted-up antlered buck that they shot.

I didn't see it but I know the guys who shot it since I worked with the guy's brother, who was there also, for 20 years but that was 25+ years ago. I'll try to reach out to him and get a pic and, with his permission, post it here.

So, YBO, was it your tag or someone else's! Pics?

Zeke

Zeke you would have noticed such a freak. Yes, I had the tag and harvested a good one. Congrats on your buck.
