Hey guys,

Heading out in late October for a Muley hunt on a giant tract of public ground. First time out there and not knowing what the winter habits are in this area, I'm hoping to come across some sheds too. Lets say I tag out on day 1..and have 6 days to shed hunt and learn the lay of the land.... How would you go about trying to figure out where they winter on this property? Near Rivers? Bluffs? Basic draws with cedars?

Any stories of you guys coming across sheds in the fall while hunting and descriptions of what you've seen is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

What state? What area?

A lot of these herds migrate 30-70 miles from their October hunting areas to winter range.

by hunting season is here, all of the obvious spots are picked up mostly. I seem to find sheds during hunting season in out of the way areas that people skip in spring/summer. With that said I have never went out "shed" hunting in the fall either..

Second weekend in September I shot my first muley. When I was walking back to my pack I found a matching set from a 4x4. It was pretty close to a river in the badlands. In a spot that was pretty hard to get to as the roads around it were all private. My guess was that hunting pressure throughout the year let them find this little section of hard to get to land with light pressure comparatively and that's where they spent their winter. This was in badlands type country where there isn't necessarily a huge migration.

I will be in Western SD. Thanks Guys.. Sounds like it will be one of those deals where I get as remote as possible...and then look for the typical bedding areas.
