LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-16 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]So January 18th I got hit in the head by a 2" steel pipe while plowing snow. I hooked a rope swing with my tractor that was held away from the tree by the steel pole. That pole snapped and drove almost vertically into my skull. That sucked.

Anyway, some folks posted on here about my accident and so many of you replied with such kind words and prayers. Very grateful for this and other communities and for all the support. Many of you sent me things. I am so grateful. You know who you are, but I am sure you don't realize the impact you made on me. Thank you. Some folks get a little pissy on here. But we are a passionate group. But when it comes right down to it we are all pretty decent.

Now back to the story......

I spent 2 months in the hospital, the first 2 weeks not aware of much and can't remember anything. Family and Dr's said i should have died. But I didn't, so I started to live this new life I had been given.
They also said I should have the mental capacity of a 2 year old, but that did not happen. I have probably 98% of it all back. Another miracle.
But, I was and still am paralyzed. Right side of my body. Some has come back, quad is 100% rest of my leg, 5%. Arm, not so good. I kind of can move it, but it has no function.

I did not think I would ever hunt again. But a few of my friends, YELUM especially, let me see the light. I may never backpack solo into G again and pack my camp and a whole deer out. But I can hunt!
I started shooting my bow with a mouth tab. Hunted Idaho deer and elk. Saw and stalked a few (still hate sitting a blind) and blew them out. Just the same as before my accident! :)
I am going to Kansas in mid November to try to bowhunt those whitetails. Maybe this year if I can stay in the blind.

But I had the general rifle in Idaho. I shot my deer the 6th morning out. Had my kids a few days, but of course no one with me the day I shot.

With no right arm I had to learn to shoot left handed and left eye. Try teaching yourself that after 40 years of doing it with your right! Yea that sucked too. So without another arm to hold the rifle I had to have something to hold it. This is what I decided on:

I have a tough time finding stuff in the scope. Can't load worth a crap and throwing the bolt open and shut is dang near impossible. But can be done just takes forever. I have decided to try a left handed AR10 in 6.5 Creedmore. We will see how that goes.

So morning of day 6 I spot my buck at 1200 yards. Where I needed to get was 900 yards away. I hoped he would feed down into the draw and hang out long enough for me to get there. I used to be able to run marathons and compete in Ironman triathlons. Before this would take me 10 minutes. Now, almost an hour. I may or may not have fallen down a few times. When I got there I took my pack off (which is difficult to get on and off, I have to lay on my back) and set up my gun on the tripod. I scooted on my butt 20 yards off the edge glassing as I went. I then spotted him almost in the bottom of the draw, 274 yards away. I moved my gun into position and realized it was to short. After raising up the center post I was able to find the buck in the scope. 6.5x.284 is an awesome caliber, and hit him perfectly behind the shoulder.
When I saw him go down I nearly cried. (I may or may not have) I realize then I can still do difficult things. But not gut and pack one out! Haha! So I called my good friend (HEADBONES) for help. Great guy.

He ended up bigger than I thought. I had chances to kill smaller bucks, but I wanted to know I could still hold out and be patient. I can. I may not be able to do what I used to, but I can do a lot still.

If any of you have any advice on things that can help me in my hunting endeavors I surely would appreciate it. I need a better way to shoot. It works but cumbersome and not fast enough to get on the deer. Also thoughts on a shotgun.. Thinking a left handed semi, short barrel and maybe with a pistol grip?

Thanks and I know this is long (took forever to type with my left hand) but thanks for reading.

You're an inspiration, Jason. Glad you're with us and back at it.......with a really nice buck. Congratulations, amigo!

Man, what a story and great buck! You asked if anyone has any advise for you and some may. I personally can't think of anything but I would say I think we could all learn something from you. Your determination is all a man needs to be successful at anything he chooses to persue.

I too suffer with a handicap and know how difficult it can be, especially mentally. You are an inspiration for me to keep hunting. I was ready to quit after drawing a LE tag, last hurrah, but after this post I am going to keep doing what I love. Congrats on the buck and hard work. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on overcoming the curveball you were thrown. Not much that hard work and a strong will cant overcome.

So dang cool, to see a man triumph over difficult obsticles. You did what realistically, shouldn't have been done. From my experienence, I knew when I 1st met you in the hospital, you would have many, many difficult days ahead. You still will. But this is just one goal accomplished in a line of many to come.

Great job Jason.

And great job Justin, for being a friend to help him. Thats what it took for me. A student in a class with me in college, became a lifelong friend, by taking an interest in me, and made the differnce between a guy in a wheelchair setting in front of a tv or computer watching others hunt, and being a guy behind the trophy.

You guys on this board can beech and moan about a lot of things you don't like about the hunting world, or you can be a hero to those like Jason and myself. You choose.

God is good bro. Way to keep at it and overcome. You definitely are proof of someone who can do anything he puts his mind to. Don't know you personally, but what a great write up you just did. Knocked down a beautiful buck. Persevered over obstacles some of us will never know. Keep pushing ahead the lord is using your story to inspire the rest of us.

Wow what a story! Sure puts life into perspective. You are an inspiration to all of us. Good luck with your recovery and there's no doubt you'll be100% before long. Thanks again for sharing with us??

They say the measure of the man is in how he deals with adversity. You sir, measure up in every way. Congrats on your hunt and a great buck.

Wow! what a great story, I love to hear about what some people are able to overcome, you are one heck of an inspirational guy! I hope this is the first of many success stories for you, and you can keep having improvements in your health, but sounds like it won't really matter, either way you will keep on moving forward. way to overcome!!

I love stories like this! Way to go! Stay optimistic. Life will only get better and better.

I don't think there is any other quality
so essential to success of any kind as the
quality of perseverance. It overcomes
almost everything, even nature.

All I can say is WOW! Whenever life gets me down, I'm going to remember this story. You, my friend, are a shining example of what can happen when effort, prayers and determination all come together to defy all odds and give back what was taken from you in an instant.

You have discovered the true meaning of "adapt" and experienced the definition of "conquer".

Congrats on your buck (bigger than any buck I have ever taken)!

I wish you the best in the future and hope you never look back at what could have been!

Awesome! Congrats Jason. I don't know how to add to what has already been said. Truly inspirational! Where there's a will, there's a way. No doubt, you have tons of will!

I'd love to read a story such as yours in one of those fancy magazines.
Don't get me wrong, I love those by-the-numbers stories, hero shots and wrapping up the tidy story by thanking their significant other for understanding; but your story and Yelum's wifey's story make me appreciate what I have and the level of perseverance it takes to overcome "real" obstacles. Congrats!

You are a stud & an inspiration-way to persevere & overcome some very large obstacles!! That is an awesome buck to be proud of.

I don't know you personally but I believe you know my brother Chad-I can speak for both of us in saying you can call on us anytime to help you pack out an animal or help you on a hunt. Don't hesitate to ask if you need help.

Man if this story and thread doesnt make your eyes water up you better check yourself... So inspiring and emotional... I have a little sister handicapped enough not to be main streamed and would give anything to kill a muley... This thread has given me a whole new perspective on how I can help her possibly achieve a goal that would make her feel like she won the lottery... Yelum... BOM... Your mindset epitimizes what it means to enjoy the outdoors and this wonderful adventure we call hunting...

Way to persevere and get the job done. 99% of us would have given up, thanks for inspiring all of us!
Oh yeah and awesome buck, congratulations.

Best story ever in MM. It sounds like you have some good people in your life, and I admire your perseverance. If there is one thing that would keep me going, it is the hunting...

Get out. Have fun.

That is Great for you Jason!!

Welcome back buddy.

Heck yeah ~~ Larry knows a thing or 2 about succeeding with a limited body function, damn good man to have in your corner.

Keep the faith,

Robb

Unbelievable! Congrats on a great buck, hunt, and especially having a winning mindset. I followed your path on Facebook and boy, you don't mention even half of the obstacles you've overcome fighting this. Miracles happen man, and your certainly another example. (Yelum, your a stud man, keep it up)

Way to go, You can't keep a good man down, Welcome my campfire anytime. Hoping the other parts that don't work right will come on back to ya. You are a tough one partner.

Glad to hear you're back at it Jason. Derek told me about the accident on Facebook when it happened. One of these years soon we need to all head to "the rock" for Moose and Blackies.

Best Mountain Muley story to date! Such an inspiration sir! You asked for advice on things that can help you with your hunting endeavors. In my opinion, you are a writer. Write some hunting stories, write for magazines, write your story. Also, share your love for hunting with sons and nephews and daughters and neices (if you have them).

Best success story of the year! As mentioned, Jason you are an inspiration to all of us! This accident, while life altering, will not define you. Keep at it my friend.

If for any reason and at any time, I have a very nice crossbow available to you. Say the word and I will bring it up.

Good luck on your whitetail hunt! I have a feeling this is going to be your year!

Agreed! Fantastic success story right there. Truly inspirational.

You are a inspiration to all of us ! Just getting back in the field would be quite an accomplishment, getting that buck is just awesome !

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

Great write up and way to stick with your passion even with all the new challenges.

Proud member of the Wolfpack!

Awesome and great. Hard to put words into what you have gone through and what you achieved. Congrats. Miracles do happen. Thanks for share yours.

That's amazing buddy you are one tough guy. Glad you cooud keep hunting. I got a pacemaker a few years ago and thought that would slow me up but it is really up to you whether or not you let things like this hold you down.
Great inspiration

Nothing short of amazing!

That's how it's done when you really really want to make something happen!

I hope you have a sure and steady recovery and continue with the love of hunting for decades to come!
Zeke

Jason is being way too humble about how hard he's worked, and how far he came since he left the hospital. He's made big strides just in the last couple months. In August he was wondering if he would ever be able to guide again, well by October he is not only guiding, but doing this....

I have no doubt you'll continue to kill big bucks for decades to come!

Amazing witness Jason of character and determination. God bless you . My prayer is that you continue to heal and are back to full speed soon .

Wow, what an awesome success story! Truly inspirational and thank you for sharing. That's a great buck, and happy for your success and recovery! Keep on doing the things you love and are passionate about. Thanks to your story, I have renewed energy and passion to do those things I love and value my time and blessings. I have no doubt you will continue to succeed and put big bucks down! Happy hunting!

Thanks again and congratulations!

Awesome story , Thanks for sharing. You are a inspiration to us all for sure. A lot of things in our lives seem to come and go and effect us in different ways but we always have hunting to fall back on.
