My dad and I are thinking of burning our CO points to hunt deer this year. I have been doing quite a bit of research and we have also talked to some biologists. Some of the units we are looking at are in the Gunnison Basin. I know they are getting a lot of snow down there this year so we will continue to monitor the winter situation. Here are some of the units we are looking at:

2nd season - 21, 66, 67

3rd season - 22, 30, 35, 36, 53, 54

4th season - 551, 64, 65

If anyone can offer some info on any of these units I would really appreciate it. Feel free to PM me.

A couple of Questions-

How much time can you spend scouting preseason?
How much time during hunting season?
Do you want to see more deer or better quality?
What size deer would you shoot?

You have hunts listed that range from as little as 2 points up to 10 or more. So I am guessing no one is going to chime in unless you define your point totals.

We would hunt the entire season and set aside a few days before to scout. We would be looking for 175" or bigger bucks and would be prepared to go home empty handed if we can't find what we are looking for. We have 11 points and I didn't put that in my original post because I knew I would probably get the usual "there's no reason you should ever build up that many points" answer. The fact is that's what we have and with point creep I don't see us gaining anything by continuing to buy points.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-17 AT 07:42PM (MST)[p]I wouldn't do a 2nd season hunt unless you had a lot of pre-season scouting in. Bucks are hard to find then. If you do go 2nd go high.

4th season is a pretty short season, but least amount of pressure and the Bucks are in the rut. The problem I see is it takes too many points to draw high quality units. The easier to draw 4th season tags don't necessarily equate to bigger bucks but rather a better hunt experience.

I like 3rd season best with the longer dates, and into the rut, in a better unit. I'd see how the winter goes...

With your points research 22, 30, 53 3rd and 551 4th with keeping this winter in mind.

You could gain some ground continuing to buy points if this Winter hammers a few of those units posted. If it'll get tags cut for a cpl years, jump in on a 3rd hunt.

Thanks for the info guys. Rich- 22, 30, and 53 were actually the main units I was looking at. I will have to get some more info on 551.
