My son and I are doing elk hunt in northwest WY above sunlight. Are there enough good bucks up there to try for a combo.would it be better muley area south of our elk unit, maybe hour or so drive radius is doable?
Any advise is appreciated.
Enjoy seeing you guys help out fellow hunters on this sight.
Thanks!

Surely hoped for better post info after this much time has gone by.
Must be good stuff up above Sunlight area and no one wants it sneaking out to a non res like me.
That's OK ,I understand.

Gonna hunt there anyway.
I can read a map just fine.
Good luck too you guys in the draw and hope you all get a big one!
Thanks anyway.

There's more grizz than elk up sunlight. That's what my customers in Cody tell me.

Good luck

Pretty decent winter kill in some areas of F this winter. They even cut non-res tags by 200. You didn't mention what elk tag you got or what area above Sunlight you are talking about?

my 16 year old son drew the 51-1 elk tag. I plan to carry a gun along for additional bear protection, therefore I'm also going to apply for a F deer tag just in case we bump into a good buck. From what I researched and heard from others is that there aren't many big bucks in this area, but like any unit, there are always a couple good ones hiding out. The G&F is currently proposing to reduce the deer tags in F from 950 - 750. The NR demand for F tags has gone up significantly the past couple years. combine that with a reduction in tags and that will make them harder to draw.

Good luck on your elk hunt. If I get lucky and draw my mountain goat tag I might also be hunting on your side of the river!

It might seem like a demand, but really it is because of all the tag cuts over the years. There used to be 1,500 tags at one time.

Yes, you are right. There has been a slight increase in the number of applicants but more importantly a significant decrease in the number of available tags over the past few years. I probably shouldn't have used the term "increase in demand" but rather "odds of drawing are decreasing".

Thanks for the correction!

After looking around for info, F has had some great animals taken over the years.
Thanks to all for your posts.
Sorry for late reply. Had terrible death in family on March 23.
It took a toll on my wife and I.
Thanks again to all the great guys out there that help on regular basis here on this sight.
