My good worries

So I am at the point of worrying myself sick about the upcoming hunting season. (This is every April, May, June) as i sit and put in for hunts. The what ifs are the worst. Im not like most guys (or maybe i am) in that i worry about two good tags at the same time...not having the money, time, or opportunity ever again. Not to mention that this process is a slow drip over months.

With that being said, last year i put in for nothing and drew nothing. Then, in July i was looking at grossly overpriced landowner tags selling for 3 to 4k. Therefore, i came to the realization that i have to give myself as many chances as possible and worry about everything else later.

I think many of us who think about hunting year round do the same. I finally decided on Utah, then Colorado, now I'm thinking Wyoming. What are my plans? Will I be able to draw a tag? What if I don't?

I even worry about where to antler hunt in Wyoming when it opens up! ha ha ha
Is that crazy or what?

YEP.......2 TAGS AT THE SAME TIME WOULD BE A BUMMER, COULD HAPPEN THIS YEAR AS WELL. NOT HAPPENED TO ME AS YET, NO TAGS.....THAT HAS HAPPENED ONCE. MONEY, TIME,& DRIVE ARE NOT A PROBLEM, BEING GONE TOO LONG FROM THE GRAND KIDS IS NOT FUN. ONCE I GET TO MY HUNTING AREA I FORGET ALL ABOUT THAT STUFF AND REALLY ENJOY MYSELF. STILL NEED ANOTHER TAG FOR 2017.....................YD.

Put in for as many tags as you want! Odds are you are lucky if you draw even one premium tag and Worry about it later if you draw conflicting tags!

I apply in 8 western states and annually apply for about 40 specific hunts in those states. In 2015 I drew 5 tags...in 2016 I drew 0 tags. Odds such overall everywhere!!

I have bonus and pref pts coming out of my ears (20+ in some states) and still struggle to draw more than one tag a year. On average though I draw one premium tag a year. My tactic is to apply for everything and hope for just one.

I do 6 states. I build a little spread sheet of when to put in, when/if I should know if I drew a hunt in a specific state before another state is due. If I know I have a good chance to draw because of many points or simple odds I will avoid doing 2 hunts that is the same time or has heavy overlap. When it rains it pours, not that fun drawing 2 tags at the same time and figuring out what your going to do with two premium hunts VS. simply enjoying one and kicking one down the road a year or two...

This is the one of the big reasons a points system is a good thing, atleast you have an idea what you might draw instead of just a bunch of dumb luck.

Colorado is my base (i hope). I put in for 70 3rd deer with 5 pts. I have alot of planning around that one. (App 80% chance)

I have twice the points in other states and shoot for the moon on those. The gut ache comes when-if i get an in state rut mulie hunt in my state (wa) which is random (like nevada). Oh well, again, good priblem to have. My other ones are pauns muzzy and nevada muzzy elk, late muzzy deer....

One year I drew two great limited entry Muley tags in two different states. It was back when I pretty much had only weekends off of work and a new baby in the house. At the time I thought I was real lucky and I dreamed about coming home with two 30 inchers. In the end I didn't put the right time in for either hunt and both bucks maybe combined to equal 30 inches. I also about found all my cloths on the porch after my last outing.

Drawing multiple tags can be a problem for sure, but the good thing is now most states allow you to return a tag, should the mother load come your way. I'd still put in for wherever you choose, but if too many tags do show up, be prepared to make some tough choices about which one(s) you may need to let go.

I take a few days for each state before I finally hit the submit button. I go back and forth on what Unit I want to draw and my backup plans etc. I totally feel your pain. I also submit my applications and then can't believe how long it feels before draw results come out!

It's a challenge every year . Many on here have been investing in quality hunts / hunt opportunity for years. I apply in 6 states and I'm struggling each year to not overlap quality hunts. I live in NM and hunting here is my number 1 priority. This year I drew an AZ arch antelope tag in unit 10 ....great tag but I took 16 NR points to get the tag. Sadly it overlaps with my elk arch tag in NM . What to do???? Think I'm going to do both with the Az tag first and Lord willing I can get a good one early . Az antelope 8/25 - 9/7 and Nm elk 9/1- 9/14 . I'm also in for a great tag in Colo for a Muzzy deer tag (9-9 / 9-17) that if drawn would totally jack me up and. I have a pretty good chance of drawing leaving me with 3 great tags that overlap and are impossible to provide quality time to.. I hate it but I love It .

Points only is a great thing to be able to buy where available.

We drew a good elk tag, now I have to dial down on my vacation and see how much time I'll have left.

A great thing where I work is they let you bank 2 weeks of vacation. So I get 4 weeks, and I have 2 in the bank, so if I draw an extra premium tag I will just eat into my bank and then build it up next year.

As far as money - cant' take it with you, I'd get a 2nd note on the truck to pay for a sheep hunt!

Unless those landowner tags are on junk units, 3 or 4 grand is not even in the same ballpark as gross overpriced.

Drew 3 great hunt's one year, all back to back to back. Burned up all my vacation time and found a new job when I returned home. My wonderful wife still loved me and the taxidermist took credit cards. Took a couple year's to pay them off Life's short, hunt NOW!

I apply wife and I for 6 species (including gen deer) in Utah, 5 species in Nv, deer/elk in Co, deer/elk/antelope in Wy. I apply myself for deer/elk/antelope in Az, and sometimes ID and NM.

We still have 50+ PPs in Ore.

Plus Kali, everything, both of us.

I rarely worry about duplicate tags. If that were to happen, I would return the tag to the state that allows you to keep your points.

In 2015 we drew 3 tags; her-early deer-Nv, me-late deer-Nv and me-late elk-Az. Not only was I able to hunt all three hunts but took the week before off to scout all 3.

2016, no tags!

2017-???? Nothing yet but great chance for her to draw 2 antelope tags (Ut and Nv).

one year drew 5 tags everyone thought I was one lucky SOB,But by the 4th hunt my tail was dragging big time and I was diesel poor between working like a slave to get eveything done in a week so could take off the following week to hunt.Week after week that will wear ya down fast. HOPE I'm not that lucky again.

No worries if you hunt Sonora Mule deer. Guaranteed tags on our combination Mule and Couse deer hunt. No trophy fees just fantastic deer hunting on private ranches near Hermosillo. Check us out under the classified hunt ads on this site.

She has9, one more than the masses, and 9 in Nevada too.

She also has 9 Ps in Nv for elk and both species of sheep.

She's dangerous.

My best chance in Nv is sheep with 12PPs. But they let me put in for elk again, 3 years early.

Someone said something above about PP only. I rarely do that. Don't want to draw Utah elk this year because I think wife will draw 1 or 2 antelope tags right before the hunt, plus not quite enough points for what I want so I put in for San Juan rifle. Won't draw BUT if it happened, the antelope tags would probably get returned. Same with LE deer. Not enough points for what I want so we are both in 1-3000 odds for the Henry's. basically a points only choice but a long shot at the best deer tag there is.

Why PP it unless you're getting married during that season, or are expecting a baby at that time.
